I want to use a samsung in my 360 so I can read my backups easily. I assume I can just create a key.bin from the Hitachi and then use KeyDrive to patch the samsung. Is this even possible?

As far as i know the dvd drive is locked to the motherboard with some sort of coding. When i had to geta new mobo i also had to get the dvd drive for that mobo with it so it'd work together.

You are correct, you can use the Drive Key Patcher/Extractor program to take the key out of the hitachi and patch the samsung to that key and you'll be good to go.

http://www.360-hq.com/download-file-62.html&title=KeyDrive%20Xtractor/Patcher%20v1.5 This is the program you need. Just extract both firmwares, back them up, then swap keys.

cool guys, thanks.

hobbs, you said I will need 2 keys. I just knew about 1 for each mobo. Is there another?

I may not even need to do it, my Hitachi is reading fine! Everyone recommends Pioneer burners with Verbatim discs, but my NEC 3520A and Ridata are working so far with the Hitachi..

Digging up an old thread but my 360 dvd drive (hitachi) is very loud! louder than my launch console youtube.

I want to know what drives are quite and how easy it is to swap keys over.

I am not interested in firmware modding I tried it so have the hardware but backups are not what I want (XBMC 360!)
