i bought a 360 abt 2 months back from a shop with the mod chip installed and its playing all the back up games. is there anyway i can find out which mod chip is bein used or if its jus a F/W hack. also is it advisable to use the new F/W hack that has released to override the MS spring update

You would have to open it up, open the dvd drive, then pull the power cable, so it will go into mode b. Then use firmware toolbox to get the firmware that is currently on it. If an original firmware shows up means there is a chip, but if it shows a modified firmware then it is firmware patched.
If you have a Samsung drive and play on xbox live it is recommended to flash to the newest release, this will allow you to play your burnt copies on xbox live without being banned. This is for the time being, M$ could come out with a way to detect it tomorrow so use at your own risk.
If you have a Hitachi drive, I'd wait until the new firmware for it is released, that defeats M$.
