Both wires X and Y are optional. Basicly X is for the activity LED meaning the Power Led will turn off when a Backup is detected. Wire Y on the other hand is for the network off feature which basicly disables the network when playing backups. Glad you spotted that problem jason by the way.

There are other chips available for the xbox 360 however the NME 1.2 is the best of the bunch in my opinion

Do you have any idea what drive you have in your xbox because the last two i did both had samsung drives and you are supposed to solder a wire from point B to a nearby resistor (see attached pic) this puts the chip into samsung mode and this may have been forgotton, just a hunch. With regards to wires X and Y i'd cut them if possible also re-check the wiring with a magnifying glass for anything that might be suspect. Keep us posted on how you get on.
protocool did u connect the b point to the resistor ? as shown in the picture ?

Not sure where you got that pic from? i've never soldered to that point before so unable to confirm it works however I can assure you that point B to the resistor definately works for samsung drives and it's really not that difficult. If you decide to use your point B and it works let me know.
