Simple USB hard drive add on
Published by Shy29 on 2005-12-03

You too can add a hard drive to your 360 via the USB plug. First you need a IDE(ATA) to USB cable adapter. I bought a set up with a hard case that will fit a 5" or 3" HDD, DVD or CD drive. It had its own power cord and a small fan to keep the drive cool. There is no support for a DVD or CD drive through the USB port on the 360. I had to re-format an "extra" HDD to FAT32 to get it to work. I only created one 32GB partition on a 160GB drive at this time but it works. You can use your Computer Manager in Windows XP so you don''t need another program.

Set up your HDD through the USB cable and connect to your PC. Windows XP should be able to find it without need for an additional driver. Right click on my computer and choose "Manage" and it will take you to the Computer Manager. Go to the "Disk Management" section under the Storage area. Find your removable HDD. MAKE SURE you have the correct HDD in the manager. Neither I, nor anyone else will is responsible if you format the incorrect drive and trash your PC. Highlight the correct drive and choose "partition". You have to create a partition no larger than 32GB to create it in FAT32 format. If you choose a larger partition size, the option of making it in FAT32 format won't even appear. Pick your drive letter, label the partition, select FAT32 format etc. etc.

You can only access pics and music... sorry no video. The pics and music must be on the root directory of the drive. Placing them in a folder did not work as the 360 could not find them. The 360 does not appear to have a file explorer system.

This is my first tutorial so I know its pretty poor. I''ll help you with the process if I can. I''ll update the info next week.
