Make a LITE-ON Probe with an Old Phone Cord
Published by hqm0nsterb0y on 2009-09-24

As far as i am aware this can be done with any cable either usb or serial that has a pl2303 chip in it! So have a dig around i suspect any cable that is DKU compatible will be usable.

What we need from the cable are whats known as the rx and tx wires, specifically the rx wire, as this is the wire which will read the key from the r707 point on the drive.

On my cable i had 3 wires gnd, rx & tx going to the phone so i cut the plug off and bared the ends back.

Next i installed the cables drivers and downloaded a little program called hyper terminal.

with hyper terminal started select the com port that has ur cable on, mine was com 5 yours may be a little different. With hyper terminal started touch the wires together untill u can type on your keyboard and see text- when u can see the text u have got the rx and the tx! It is important u identify these wires asap, it could be detrimental to ur xbox if u hook the ground or 5v supply up to the r707 point! So for safety etc this is probably the most important point!

Now comes the difficult bit, as far as i know there is no way to differentiate between the RX and TX at this stage, so tape the gnd wire up and leave the other 2 bared back.

This is where i followed this PDF Guide:
Phone Probe

As u can see the rx is pin 5 on the chip so i quickly traced around the pcb and found it was labeled as number 3. At this point i was 99% certain that i had the rx, so i taped up the tx and left it along with the ground.

Next i found an old needle and ballpoint pen, i stripped back the sheathing on the rx wire and carefully threaded it through the needle, then added a quick dab of solder to hold it in place.

After that i slid it into the pen to make it easier to hold and used a bit of tape to hold everything in place.

Job done!

If you set up and when it comes to reading the drive you can't get anything first check with hyper terminal that you have the rx and tx. check no solder points have come loose while u have been working away. Check you have the drivers installed for ur cable as well, i had a little bit of trouble with those lol

For anyone concerned about damaging there drive dont worry its impossible to break it with the rx and tx cables, they just transmit or recieve data. So if u try and get no luck or cant be bothered to trace out the connections, then try the other wire from the pair- the xbox will be transmitting (tx) and u need to receive it (rx). :D
