Introduction
This post is for anyone having issues with Windows Media Player 11 on a XP Home/Pro PC and sharing their content with the 360.
After updating to WMP 11 the other day I found that it broke the connection between my PC and Xbox for Media sharing. The Xbox would find the network fine but was unable to view any files. And when checking in the Media Connect section on the PC it would not display the Xbox.
It should be noted at this stage WMP 11 now combines Media Connect within the program itself.
The way I found to fix this is to first double check you have all the ports open for your Xbox and Media Connect. Do this in either your firewall settings or router settings. These are the ports you need to open:
The second thing to make sure you did was when you installed WMP it asks you if you would like to setup Media Sharing, if you choose NO at this point you will need to start WMP 11 and goto the Library tab, click the little arrow on the same tab for the drop-down list to appear and choose Media Sharing and make sure you enable it.
Once everything is setup as above make sure WMP 11 is still running and fire up your 360. Now goto your System tab and choose Computers and select your currently setup PC and choose Disconnect.
Now goto your Media tab on the 360 and choose Music and select the Computer option. The 360 will now attempt to connect to your PC and will get so far and fail.
Go over to your PC and on WMP 11 choose the Library tab and click the Arrow on the same tab, now choose Media Sharing from the drop=down list and the familiar Media Connect screen pops up.
You should now see an Unknown Device in your list, highlight this and click Allow. Then choose customize and choose what you want to share and click apply.
Now go back to your 360 and power it down and restart it. Once again goto the Media tab and choose music and then Computer, this time you should be able to fully connect. Make sure you setup some share folders in WMP 11 tho.
If you now check the Media Connect screen you will see the unknown device is now shown as your 360.
