I haven been on here much or on xbox hq, but i am still around.... I bought an xbox 360 pretty cheap. been searching the web and havent found an answer.

I get an error put disk in 360 counsole. has a philliphs benq drive, (not sure if its the right dvd drive) I bought a new one changed the pcb on it from old to new dvd drive, same error...

Is there any way to check what drive came with the xbox 360 or retrieve the key off the main board to match the dvd drive board?

Just a thought. if the DVD key is on the dvd drive , well it must have to match the motherboard, there for the key should also be on the motherboard, and should be able to be read or flashed to get the key to flash a new drive with this information. as the orignial xbox has an eeprom that has to match the hard drive in order to unlock and lock to register the xbox. , there has to be a way.if microsoft can do it why cant we?

Please help! thanks so much,

Hi Rodent,

Sorry I missed your post.
Basically what needs to be done is this.

SPOOFING A DRIVE

1. Backup the original firmware from the broken drive. (most drives dont need to be able to read discs and can stil be backed up)

2. Open the old firmware in say Maximus 360 Toolbox and copy the key.

3. Close Maximus 360 Toolbar

4. Backup the new dvdrom drive firmware

5. Open the newer firmware in Maximus 360 Toolbox and paste the original drive key into the space provided and save the firmware to PC.

6. Spoof your new drive as the same MODEL and BRAND as the original.
Spoofing is basically tricking the xbox 360 to thinking that the new drive you are installing is exactly the same as the old drive. model etc.

7. Now reflash the new firmware back to your new drive using whatever tools you like.. JungleFlasher, Iprep or whatever.. It's been a while for me

8. Done.

Here is a guide I wrote which has helped 1000's of people change their drives with great success.

Thanks for the INFO. lets make sure we are on the same page here.

I bought a 360 . the guy said that it had wouldnt read the game disk.

"i think it may not be the right dvd drive for this xbox 360"

so if I do what you said, I can make this work?

others tell me its a glorified dvd player
I bought it for $35.00us

thanks for the reply, i have also read i can get the key off the motherboard.

this is how i see how it is, the motherboard and the dvd drive need to read the same key on the 360. is this true? Just as an orignal xbox does to unlock the hdd.

Hi there mate,

If it is NOT the original drive or you do not have a copy of the original drive key you will need to use JungleFlasher to get the key.. Well hopefully..

I've just got my fingers crossed that it works for you.
Once you get the unique key you basically follow the spoofing tutorial.. Pretty simple.

All you want to do is get the MAGIC key into the new drive.

Without the unique key all the drive will do is play movies like you said.

good luck and please reply and let us know if you have luck!

when I start jungleflasher, and select xbox 360 motherboard. does the 360 have to be on to do this? didnt say that in tutorial if it has to be on or not.

Ok well I tried it a few different ways, and used JungleFlasher 1.76.
it never reconizes the xbox 360 motherboard. followed the tutorial and the link i posted...did everything it said to do. tried it with the xbox on and off and rebooted pc and xbox and still nothing wouldnt reconize the motherboard, tried windows xp with all its requirments that the pdf said it needs and windows vista, and everything it needs.

It says to copy the the key and eeprom , dont even see where it says copy , just read ,erase and write to drives. looked for videos couldn"t find anything. will try again tomorrow. been up since 5am working on my !st case mod and reading tuts and then started this about an hour after you posted. its now 1:30 am EST . very dedicated to my work... thanks again FORAHOBBY. I believe this can still be done, just I am missing something or just over looking something

After doing a little reading, I'm pretty sure you need a JTAG box to get the keys off the main board.. I could be wrong but i also quizzed HQ Scarface and a few other tech guys and they say the same. JTAG.

I have heard of other methods like BRUTE FORCE, but i have no idea how you would go about that on a retail box. Sad

I hope it can be done on a retail box but i guess we will have to wait and see, I dont have the time right now to try it, i've never had the need so far since i always backup everything.

Ok well no one has commented on what i said , it being ike the orignal xbox, some how some way it is possible, if you can read the eeprom on the old xbox and get the key, i believe there is a way to do it on the 360. or maybe read it through another Jtagged xbox, or eeprom reader. microsoft didnt make it that hard. they wouldnt of wasted the time and money they alread had a good product they just added to it. and charged more.. but i could be wrong but i still believe it can be done.

I totally understand where your coming from and yes i believe it can be done, but whether or not jungleflasher can do it we will have to find out.
I'm hoping it can be done, it will be very useful for retail boxes for drives which have died just like yours.

Where there is a will there is a way my friend.. Smile

When i get a bit more time to myself i will hunt around and see if i can find different methods or maybe a chip of sometype which may help.
