Unfortunately, you cannot softmod the XBox 360 like you could with the Original Xbox. The 360 has way more advanced security system. There are different exploits that are available to be used. Although if you have a newer Xbox 360 or Xbox 360 Slim or have connected to Xbox Live recently, the exploit cannot be performed. There two exploits are the King Kong Exploit, which requires the 4xxx dash, and requires the DVD Firmware to be flashed (to read backup 360 games). And the second exploit is the most common, the JTAG exploit, the JTAG exploit can be performed on the Xbox 360's with the kernel version 7xxx or lower. The exploits are used to boot unverifed xex files (XBox Executable files, similar to the Executale files on Windows) and lets you do things like use any 2.5" SATA hard drive in your Xbox 360, so removed Hard Drive Verification. The big part of the JTAG and King Kong exploit is that it allows it to boot the linux kernel, which can be used for multiple different things.
