Normal TV that you recieve is called 480i, EDTV (enhanced definition) is at 480p. HDTV is considered to be either 720p or 1080i. I'll go into a bit more detail below.

The number in front tells you how many lines are on the screen, where the letter at the end details how the lines are displayed.

I means interlaced, this means displaying every other line at one time, then the other lines refresh the next frame. This happens at 60 times per second, so to the human eye it looks like one solid moving image. This can cause some flicker and slight lag, but not really noticable to most people.

P means progressive, you've probably noticed a lot of new dvd players promosing progressive scanning, this is the P. What it does it refreshes every line on the screen each of those frames. so there is 60 new images per second.

The quality ranks in this order: 480i(SDTV), 480p(EDTV), 1080i(HDTV), 720p(HDTV).

The reason that 1080i is worse than 720p is that it displays only 540 lines per frame then shows the other 540 the next frame, where 720 displays all 720 each frame. 720p is much better for sports, action movies, games, etc. Where 1080i is better suited to normal tv shows and some other types of movies, but 720p will display both greatly.

If you have a CRT based HDTV, 1080i is the native resolution, so it may look better to have that type of signal, where a DLP/LCD/Plasma type tv is natively 720p, this type of signal will look much better on it.
