Ok people I have not yet purchased a 360 yet and wonder, I do not have a Hi Def television. I do have a nice big screen television but it is not hi definition. I wanted to know how big of a difference does it look on a HD tv compared to a non HD television. I mean I dont want to waste my money if I'm going to have the same graphics as a regular xbox without a HD televison. Anyone with info on this please help, as I am sure not everybody has a HD tv that has a 360.

I don't have a High def tv either but I'm glad I got my 360.

You have to look at it this way. The real big deal about HDTV is the fact that it lets you sit closer to the screen and not see the pixles and/or it lets you need less of a distance vs size ratio.

So lets say you sit 10 feet from the TV. Standard TV recomneds around a 32" TV for for the best size and picture combo at 10 feet.

While at the same 10 feet with an HDTV you can go upwards around 80"+ before you start having problems with pixel size.

But here is the trick,,,, if you have a 32" HDTV at a 10 foot viewing distance there will be no noticable difference in quality of the picture between a standard and a High Def TV. The advantage here with HDTV is that you can move closer to the set and increase the quality of the picture

It depends on how big of an HDTV you buy the bigger you get the more diffenrence you will see.

My opinion on this is, when I sit on the couch and playQuake 4 it looks great to me and I have never seen Halo look better. and the best thing is that when I get an HDTV,,,, it can only get better Very Happy

You guys want honest truth?

if you dont have hd tv then i strongly agree to not get a xbox 360 UNTIL you get a hdtv.... because its bearly noticeable on a edtv ....

now a hdtv a good one is always a crt tube... u know those BIG BULKY FAT tvs.. yep those....

plasmas and lcds and those skiny ones dont do the trick really... they burn the image on screen then if u poke it u got ink coming out and this n that....

HOWEVER if u really have $$$ their are coming recently newer plasmas/lcds that are really good...

BUT if you want the BEST of the BEST TV then get a crt tube hdtv....

i know how they work n this n that.... so i know which ones are the best....

PUT IT THIS WAY.. u know how 360 are displayed on the kiosk desk? well that isnt HALF THE QUALITY I SEE ON MY HDTV .. yep u heard it .. not even HALF... and im talking when i pluged it via regular red white yellow cables... now i have it on hd cables ..... and halo 2 looks totaly difrent... it feels like HALO 3 ... that intense...

SO IN FINAL WORDS... spend cash on good tv then get ur 360...

and try stay away from the skinny tvs... plasmas lcds and the big bulky projector tvs like....

crt tubes are best.... of course only down side is that they are tooo big...

i was running my 360 on a 32" standard tv and it still looked sweet... alot of the games arent much better than the latest and best of xbox titles, but thats a programming thing and will get better.

HDTV is icing on the cake... its just a crisper image. i was plenty happy with the 360 on the 32" but its even better on HD. i wouldnt pass on the 360 just cuz you have a standard tv, you can always upgrade that later

HDTV is just an added bonus... You will not regret not having HDTV and on the same token, you will not regret getting HDTV. There is a noticeable difference..

Is it worth the extra money? That's all relative... If you have the extra money to upgrade to HDTV then go for it. Slowly cable and satellite are adding HDTV channels..

This is debatable,

CRT TVs have the best track record for reliability and tubes have the best contrast of all Tvs, but they are prone to burn in and they do not have a true digital picture as the picture has to be converted to analog before it is scanned onto the screen. This is for both direct tube and projection versions. But with screen savers built into video games you really don't have to worry about the burn in part, you would have to worry more about burn in if you watched allot of home videos with graphics on the screen. But the price on CRT rear projectors is the best per size on the market. Also, the CRT tubes are limited in size and then you have to worry about the viewing distance thing.

I personally like the DLP, These are not effected by burn in and when the picture starts to fade a few years down the road, the bulb is fairly easy to change and you are back to a good as new picture. With others you have to change most of the internals of the set or just replace it. The DLPs are also available in 1080p for a fairly decent price. A 52" model on average has less depth than a standard 27" TV. The biggest draw back to DLPs is that it remains to be seen how long the color wheels last but some estimate are upwards to 10 years, and some people have problems with perceiving a rainbow effect on older models with slower color wheel speeds.

yea i like dlp projectors too... crt tubes dont burn the image .... in fact the plasmas/ lcds do thats 1 of the reasons they suck... ( not coverd by warranty) no matter what..... it has ink inside ..... where a crt tube has crystals ......

so crt tubes vs slim tvs then crt better.... so for what i expericed and what i also heard from real profesinaols....

itake it like this.. my neboir bought a plasma for $7,000 and he was pratically crying asking me why this n that .... and i know my tv retaily cost about 7, 000 as well.. but i only paid 3,000 or less... so what im trying to prove here is that if u want quality then get crt tubes...

i perfer have a analog non hdtv crt tube then a plasma/lcd slim tv .....

cheaper and better....

I have a 32" standard Flat Screen TV. Component input available, but not used, and HDTV non supported. My friend brought his 360 over the other day. We sat and played it for about 5 hours. It was awesome. Standard AV inputs. I usually sit anywhere from 5-10 feet from my TV. Honestly, I thought it was HDTV (it looked just like the display units in the stores). So, I got antsy and plugged in the component cables. Sat down, booted up, and the picture was minimally clearer.

I've played with Plasma's, and all that jazz, and ya know what? I really believe the my 32" flat screen (NOT FLAT PANEL) Monster really stands up to the video test. We played Quake IV, DOA4, FNR3, PDZ, they all looked absolutely beautiful.

So one last test... With the Components still plugged in, I fired up PDZ and sat about 3 feet away from the screen (computer comfortable) and put it on two player co-op. Hell, I thought I was playin on a computer. The 360's filtering is that beasty.

And this isn't some beasty expensive tv, it's a Target $212 Daewoo special. Weighs like 175lbs, too. Damned thing. So all in all, it's all about what you want to show off to your friends. And how bad you wanna hurt your credit. If you can't afford the big BAMF TV, don't bother, just play around with what you have, it'll still work, and still look amazing.

Of course, I can't really play holier than thou... I'ma get a 12 foot projector and use one of the walls in my new house to play most of my games when I move in Very Happy. Yes, yes, HD compatible... But wouldn't that be HDW (High Definition Wall) instead of HDTV???

Yes a 360 is worth getting if you don't have a HDTV, I just went to a friends house for a few days and played on a 19" Cheapo TV. I could tell a major difference between the 360 and his ps2 and xbox. It's a major improvement. But for the true experience you need a HDTV and 5.1 Dobly Digital Surround Sound. But those last two things are just icing on the cake.

For the Price and Quality a DLP set is the best option, you get the largest size for the lowest price. CRT can't even begin to compare to the other types of HDTVs as they can only be so big before you need a forklift to bring them inside your house. I believe currently the biggest crt tv you can buy is 42" MAXIMUM. A set of this size would weigh well over 200lbs/100kgs. Where you can get a Plasma TV with a screen size of well over 60" and it may way about 60lbs/25kgs. And LCD TVs are going at 50"+ and weigh even less than plasmas, normally around 50lbs/20kgs. And what about the thickness? The smallest a CRT will ever be is 24" where the thickest a LCD or Plasma would be is 7". So basically the thinnest crt will still be 3 times as thick as the thickest Flat Panel.

My LCD is only 3-1/2" thick it's a 30" and weighs about 30lbs, I can easily move it from room to room if the need arises. I don't have to worry about it breaking the studs in the walls if I choose to hang it there. I also got a great deal on mine, it only cost me $800. You paid $3000 for a $7000 tv? I kinda doubt you would get that much of a deal unless you waited and got a 5 year old tv from some stock that was just laying around not being sold. I got mine a year after they released them at $2500 I got a refurbished unit and shopped around for a while to get mine at $800 the going price for mine brand new is about $1200. It displays perfect 720p content and is even able to show VGA data (from your pc) at 1280 x 768.

Burn-in? LCDs cannot get burn-in, the only types of displays that are even prone to burn-in are CRT, Plasma, and certain types of projection type tvs. CRTs and Plasmas are just as likely to burn-in, You are correct is assuming that Plasmas can burn-in, but this was mainly on the first generation. Where I used to work we had one that displayed a spreadsheet all day long, you could turn it to a tv station at the end of the day and not even see the ghosting image. This tv stayed on that screen for atleast 8hrs a day. The phosphors in the crt's screen can just as easily burn-in and leave a residual image that will stay, however most of the time if a screen (plasma or crt) burn-in the effect is only momentary and the static image will go away after a few minutes.

If you would prefer to have a sdtv to a flat panel tv, by all means I'll trade you all day long. I can round up enough friends that have old sdtv's that would love to have new flat panels, they are all jealous of me right now, that would set us about right.

And you are partially correct in saying that crts have the best quality, as it varies. They normally have the best contrast ratio. However LCDs normally have the brightest pictures. Plasmas have the larger sizes. It's pretty much a toss up of which one is better. I wanted a big, light tv that displayed 720p. I wanted something decently cheap so I chose a LCD.

I thought earlier you had said your TV would only display 480p anways? That's not HDTV that's EDTV which is about 33% less quality of a 720p tv. And if you have yours connected via Composite input, you aren't even seeing the possible quailty that your magical tv could have. As next to a digital connection (dvi/hdmi) component (red/blue/green) is the best connection with the highest quality. You are only viewing your 360 at 480i which makes the quailty about 20% OF the quailty that can be displayed through the component cables.

I just don't see how you can come on here, and tell people all of these things without researching them first. I've spent the last year researching every possible HD solution for me, and I've learned a lot. It takes a while to google and find out everything but there's tons of myths out there about burn in, quality, and price that just really aren't true but most of the people hear them and spread them around like the truth and this creates a huge problem for those that really know what they are talking about.

so in short terms angelos your saying that your flat screen tv looks better tehn those plasmas right??? i totaly agree i really dont like those skiny tvs.....

so end result i think crt tubes aka big fat hevy bulky tvs look better then the ususal plasmas/lcd sliim tvs....

based on quality not other factors....

with plasma from an angle u can't see shit .....

but with crt , screen is viewable just as good from all angles so this = perfect tv.....
