Has anyone tried to hook up their 360 hard drive to their computer? It's only a SATA drive, and I was curious if they had and if it could be read. I was wondering because, if the 360 could read FAT32 removables, in theory couldn't you format another SATA hard drive and hook it up in the hard drive casing? Not really sure on the technical aspects on this, and really didn't see this anywhere in the forums. Here is the link to the story that got me wondering in the first place:

Disassembling the Xbox 360 HDD Unit

Unfortunately, my current board doesnt have SATA ability, but I am buying one in the near future that does, and I was just curious if that is something that I should look into.

You can, I think, but you need the special programs from the Xbox 360 downloads area. They let you read the info on them, or something

I'm not really wanting to read the contents as much as I want to put a larger hard drive in that casing, so I don't have excess cables and what not laying around my box.

ive never heard that anyone has successfully swapped in a larger drive. if i was going to try something id say try some pc drive cloning software... something that will clone a partition without caring what the data is

Im sure that M-soft knew that people would try to do this and that is why even if you switched it out with a larger drive it would only be read as a portable device. They charge $100 for a 20gb hard drive and would lose mad money if people could put 200gb drives in for a similar price.

You are probably right, but I think I'm gonna spend some time on that once I get my new board in, because I'm sure that I'm not the only one who would like to be able to do this. Of course, HQ will be the first place to know if I figure anything out with it.

You CAN swap out the HDD in the enclosure with another SATA drive. Simply connect both of the SATA drives to a pc and run Norton Ghost and do a complete copy of the original HDD onto the new larger one. Norton Ghost is a "bit by bit" program and will successfully copy everything onto the larger drive and the xbox360 will recognize the new drive just like it did the original but it will have much more space, obviously this depends on how big the new drive is.

That is definitely good to know. I wasn't really sure but knew it was something that I definitely wanted to do if it was possible. I thank you for the information and look forward to completing this task in the near future.
