Hi there just got this email from my xbox parts surplyer letting everone no.
Urgent Notice!
There is an update for Xbox 360 coming out on May 7th which could potentially
brick firmware modified Consoles.
I urge everyone with a Firmware modified console to hold off connecting to Xbox
Live (or updating their consoles in any way at all) after May 6 until more
details are known.
Although this is simply a suspicion among the modding community, and may well
prove to be false, it's much better to be safe than sorry.
It's suspected that the most prone to being bricked are the consoles with
Hitachi DVD-ROM Drives, however in saying that - even if you have a Samsung
drive, please do not connect to Xbox Live - disconnect your 360 from the
network.
We'll be trying to gather information as fast as we can post May 7 on what
exactly the update is doing to the consoles, and we'll let all of you know as
soon as we find out what is going on.
If you have had your console modified by us, please e-mail me ASAP with your
console serial number and name as the subject heading, ie:
#(Xbox Serial Number) - (Name)
We have everyones Xbox 360 Firmware stored on our computers - categorized by
serial number - so if the update is only affecting certain
machines/drives/firmwares, I can check out each firmware and let people know
exactly what will happen to their console.
I'll send another e-mail on May 6 reminding you to disconnect your XBox 360 from
Live, and then another when I find out more information about what the May
Update is doing to the machines.

Haven't come across this anywhere. I'd love to know his source. Anyway you can shoot him an email and ask where he heard this rumor from? I've looked in all the modding communities I know of and not a peep.

I dont know anything about it possibly bricking any drives, but just incase you people are searching for the news on the update it self it can be found here
This is the article explaining what the new update will do to the console, but of course nothing on modified firmware, obviously because its directly from xbox.

Got a new email from Xbox shop.
Just a reminder to all of you with Firmware Modified consoles to disconnect your
Xbox 360 from the Xbox Live service today.
As mentioned in a previous e-mail, we suspect that the new update will have the
potential to 'brick' firmware modded consoles.
As the update is released on the 7th of May US time (and we are 16hrs behind
most of the US). So disconnect your 360 today!
