The first thing that I would check is the cables to make sure they are seated correctly on the AV lead.

Is it setup using the standard scart lead that has the phono leads in the back? Check they are in fully.

If its setup via composite leads, check they are seated correctly.

If you still have problems take your lead around there and use that to see if that cures the problem.

Apart from that i'm not to sure, but it might be worth testing his 360 on another TV to make sure there are no problems with the sockets on the TV.

It could well be a fault with the 360 itself then everclear. It may be worth ringing up MS tech support to see if they can shed some light on the problem. Other than that if your mate managed to get the original receipt for the 360 when he brought it from this bloke it might still be under warranty.
