First off I would like to say that I have read through the forums to get this kind of information but since most new people usually have topics like "hey guys..." I found it hard to find decent information.
I would like to know a few things:
a) I have an arcade, can these still be modded easily enough? Kernel 2.0.8955.0
b) Soft mod or hard mod?
c) Can you install/load games from an device (external HDD)?
d) Is the graphics chip just as likely to melt down as my previous xbox (RIP 2008)
oh and I don't care for xbox live and never intend to connect it (not sure if this makes it easier as I know there are mass bans)

First of all, welcome to 360-hq.com! And now to answer your questions.
a) No, MS patched the exploit, they blew a eFUSE that the JTAG Hack relied on and rewrote the first bootloader. You will need a xbox 360 under 2.0.7xxx in order to do the JTAG hack.
b) The JTAG exploit is enabled through a little bit of soldering and/or a modification chip, so its a hardware modification.
c) If you have a Xbox 360 with the JTAG exploit performed, then yes. Otherwize, no. But you can save games onto the XBox 360 Hard Disc Drive but you still need the game to be in the DVD Drive.
d) No, it shouldent have anyways, make sure it has enough air and its not in a closed area. _________________________________________________________

Thanks for the information and warm welcome
=)
What I understand from your comments is that the JTAG Hack/exploit is no longer available.. are there any other options? or should I just put up with my kid scratching my games
(apart from buying an older xbox)
*After doing some research I pose this question: Can I just flash my xbox dvd drive and backup game dics with my liteon dvd burner I used to use?

No, the JTAG is still available, BUT, you will need to purchase an Xbox 360 which is old or has been refurbished. You can sometimes find JTAG's on ebay but not many in australia, mostly the tools to do it. Maybe you have an old xbox 360 at home that has never been online or updated? that would be a good starting point for JTAG. Just check dashboards.

Yes, you can easily flash your xbox 360 dvdrom firmware. Depending on which drive you have will determine what tools you will need (if any).
The liteon drives i use a connectivity kit with but the newer liteon's i believe are harder to flash.. Hitachi, Samsung and BENQ drives are the easiest. Liteon's take alot of mucking around if you haven't done one previously.
Only prob with flashing your firmware is if you play online chances are you will be banned for not having a stealthed backup of your game or doing something wrong while burning. You need to use tools like ABGx to verify your images etc before playing.
If you are going to stay offline with this box.. sure go for it.
I can't see why you wouldn't if you dont use LIVE.
anyway, enjoy the sites mate, hope you get more involved and ask whatever questions you feel like..

a) just flash ur DVD drive
b) which ever u want soft are easier
c) yes if u flash it or jtag it
d) just get better cooler fans ... i think Hobby can hook you up
a bit of info...
a flashed xbox lets u play you own games that u burn. these games can be modded etc.
a JTAG takes you xbox out of debug mode... if you do any programming you will know that debuging is when u put all the codes together and use the app... so by taking it out of debug mode you can chage the codes... ( like to make MW2 private match's XP)
if you just want to play / save games... just HOT SWAP... rent a game (WAW) burn a modded coppy (swap disc's and save to the xbox ) but if you do this you will need to keep the game... ( what you can do is swap the printed covers andd give then a coppy disc ...

You can't play games from a external hard disc drive if you flash the DVD Drive, haha, you can only do that with a JTAG XBox 360, a JTAG is allowed to is launch homebrew and read your FAT32 formatted USB device with your backed up Xbox 360 games and launch them. All the DVD Firmware hack does is replace the firmware in the DVD Drive with hacked firmware that removes the XBox 360 Wave Check's allowing the DVD Drive to access a XBox 360 Game on a burnt DVD disc. And unfortunatly, hot swapping cannot be completed as you will still need the original copy of the game. _________________________________________________________

Wow, thanks for the really helpful replies..
2005.. yeah that was the original xbox and my ealier flashed xbox360 ( A friend flashed the drive for me back then )
From all of my options I think flashing the drive seems the best option available to me.. I just have to work out how, I have browsed the tutorials but would like to be sure of the right guide. I believe I have the liteon drive in the xbox (2 yellow wires behind the hole at the dvd drive) so if someone could point me in that direction that would be very helpful.
I have heard that you can use an xbox 360 dvd drive and connect it to your pc (using console power or a kit) to read discs.. If I do this, can I use a standard burner to burn the discs or do I still need to flash a dvd drive for my pc.
Sorry for all the questions, I am trying to be as specific as possible =D
Help so far has been fantastic, I only trust information from this site.

Thanks for trusting us.
You will need a longer SATA cable for one. And you will need to put it into Manufacture Mode in order to access the firmware on the drive. _________________________________________________________

yes so if you have the CD you dont need to save it to your HDD... you only need the VD if you HOTSWAP
