Well i finally got it working.

All you have to do is download the "Opitional Media Update" while logged in with a silver account for it to work offline.
Then all your profiles can watch movies offline with your USB HD .

Thanx to everyone for there help.

Cheers DOA

Okay, so maybe I'm the odd one out here but absolutely nothing I'm trying is getting this to work the way I want it to. I'm trying to play an AVI from a flash drive while offline, which, as I understand it is exactly what the OP is trying (and has now done successfully). I've definitely done this before, after the original codec update and about a year ago.

Just to clarify:

- I've already downloaded the "Optional Media Update" while on a silver account. I've actually downloaded it several times, deleted it and re-downloaded it probably half a dozen times.

- I have the new NXE and a year old Xbox.

- It plays fine while online and even if I'm disconnected while watching it. I even managed to get it to stop, disconnect from Live and then play from my silver account.

- It fails when I sign out/power off and then trying signing back in (while offline) to play it.

Now, I've had a gold account for several years off and on. I went to a silver account recently. So, according to the last remarks by the OP, this should work for me without a problem. But it's not.

Also, I'm not sure how anyone was able to download the "Optional Media Update" while being signed off, since the error message I get requires me to sign back into Xbox Live and try playing the video. I can't get the update any other way that I know of -- the only way is to be on Xbox Live, signed into a profile and attempt playing it unless I'm missing something.

So...a little help here would be awesome. Any suggestions? Did I miss something? Thanks.

Actually, nix that. Wink

I figured it out. Maybe someone on here mentioned it already, but apparently you're only allowed one "Optional Media Update" per console, regardless of the hard drive (this is my original HDD). I'm thinking that either the NXE triggered that or maybe it's always been that way and I wasn't privy.

Either way, once I created a new silver account, independent from the other account I had and have always used since '05, I was able to gain this particular console's unique acceptance of the "Optional Media Update" and it works.

Thanks folks. You guys helped point me in the right direction.

Hey lockley,

Thanks for taking the time to reply and let us know it worked for you too.. Smile

I didn't have internet for a few months before the update and I had similar issues until i removed and re-downloaded it again. I knew it had something to do with the unique console download or something but glad you all got it sorted.. With the new NXE dashboard i had to do it again and had no problems this time.

feel free to reply if you have any other tips people,,

cheers,

Like so many others, I got the Red Ring of Death on my console, and got a replacement from Microsoft. After putting my hard drive and such back on, I ran into the same issue as everyone here.. and had some serious issues fixing it, but here's how I did it..

1. Remove the update entirely
1.1 Go to My XBOX Tab > System Settings > Memory > Hard Drive > System Items and Remove the Optional Media Update.
1.2 Go to My XBOX Tab > System Settings > Memory and hover over the Hard Drive and Press Y (Device Options), select Clear System Cache and confirm.
1.3 Reboot the console.

2. New Silver Account
2.1 Now when I tried to make a new xbox live account on my console it would always give me a upgrade to gold for a month - no good. So go to xbox.com and create a new XBox live Silver account.
2.2 On your console, recover this gamertag (Make sure you're logged out) My XBox > Sign in > Recover Gamertag) and follow the menus.

3. Media Update Download
3.1 Restart (The console should now auto login to your new account, keep it this way) and play a video, you'll be prompted to get the media update. Do so, and you'll find you can now play your videos offline - even after a restart.

Hope that helps you guys out there!

Yep - it works offline using the method. It took a while to find the exact steps and order but works 100% for me and should work for others.

Cheers

What I found that worked out great is just go to this link:
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/systemuse/xbox360/licensemigration/

and follow the step by step. I was unable to watch movies or play game add-ons without being on xbox live. After I did this everything works perfectly, so its just a thought for something else to try.
