Hi all,

(@Hobbs I am glad you made this only visible to VIP members or moderators. I don't like doing business online unless it's official through amazon, but I could accept this as an alternative to the big boy online retailers. Provided you, SPPV and someone like legendary, say can provide references, I might buy from people on here.)

Here's my question:

Someone is offering an xbox slim for $50, but they said the dvd drive can't seem to read any media. It does not have a hard drive, has not had any other hardware issues (so they say). It does have its own internal wifi (card or antenna? not sure what the proper term is).

Basically they say you can use it to play xbox arcade downloads or use for netflix. Of course one could use xk3y etc., which this person does not know about.

Does it seem like a good deal to buy this console once I mod to play games from an internal or external hdd? Or should I just wait another few months for someone to offer another slim with wifi for about the same price, but with a working drive?

Thanks in advance for the advice

Hi mate,

sorry i missed your thread but i haven't had a pc for a few weeks. Anyway, as long as you can get a copy of the unique DVD key you can replace the dvdrom no problems. Also, yes as long as you can get the dvd key from the original drive you should be able to install an xk3y.

How have ya been? Still lovin' that JTAG/RGH box you got?

Been fine just busy with school. Still trying to provide some help alongside Ken on xbox-hq for now.

I think that particular xbox I was referring to was sold. But I'll keep that dvd key extraction trick in mind. Do I need to RGH a slim to get the dvd key? Or is that only for the newest of the 360 dvd drives (Halo 4 console for example)?

If I had the dvd key could I simply pop in any SATA dvd drive into the console and use it to read retail disks? Or does 360 read its dvd games differently than regular dvd players like with og xbox?

Whenever you replace an Xbox 360 DVD drive you need to make sure the drive is exactly the same and the unique key is correct. Otherwise the dvdrom drive will not play games and will only load movies and audio cds.

So, with that said. If you get say another xbox 360 drive you do what's called spoofing.. It makes any other make or model the same model as what was originally in the machine.[/quote]

You could put in any other xbox 360 dvdrom drive but like i said you'll need to spoof it if its not the same make and model as the original one.

For offline use i dont think you need to spoof it.

From what I just googled it sounds like if I were to go on live M$ would see that my dvd key (which I assume records my OEM dvd drive brand) matches the drive I'm currently using. I have no need for xbox live so that doesn't concern me.

How about I phrase my questions this way. Suppose I extract my dvd key from my console. Can I:

1.) Simply pop in any other 360 drive and connect it to the mobo without doing anything further with the dvd key?

2.) Plug in a different 360 drive, same model, from another console?

3.) Simply use a regular SATA computer dvd drive in my 360 to read retail games?

P.S. Yeah my RGH console is still kicking. I actually took out the dvd drive and left the eject tray hole open. Now my console runs a few degrees cooler. It's nice that glitched 360's don't need to have the dvd drive plugged in to run the console. No need for it since my games are backup to the internal to begin with.
