Microsoft has released detailed information on game licensing, connectivity requirements, and Kinect privacy.

Game Licensing

Buy any game via digital (Xbox Live) or disc on the day of release.
No disc required to play any game – everything is stored in the cloud and accessed through your login (ie play your games at your friends house on his console with your login – hourly internet check-in required for this though).
Anyone can play games on your console (regardless of who they are logged in as).
Up to ten members of your household can access your “shared games library” from any console at any time using their login.
Renting and loaning of games is not possible at launch, but Microsoft is looking at introducing this later.
You will be able to trade-in games, but this will be entirely up to the publisher and only at “participating retailers”. There are no fees charged by Microsoft for this (but publishers could).

Internet Connectivity Requirements

Your console will “check-in” with Microsoft every 24 hours over the internet. If you can’t or don’t do this, you can’t play offline or online games.
If you are playing on a friend’s console with your login (ie to access your games library) then the X1 must check-in over the internet every one hour.

Kinect and Privacy

If your X1 is turned on and you are having a conversation with someone, the conversation is not being recorded or uploaded.
When your X1 is turned off, the Kinect is only listening for the command “Xbox on” to turn the console back on. This feature can be disabled.

I'm good with all this but...

Not too keen about the rental thing. I never rent any games but if I wanted to, I want the ability to rent games. They will have rentals at some point, is a belief of mine

Some of the other items in the list I see as features.

I hate having to put the disc in when it is on the drive. Check
Very cool that anyone in the house can use the games on any login.
Very cool you can play your game at a friends house or vice versa
Very cool that anyone can play their games on any x1 console
Very cool you will be able to trade-in your games and that MS does not charge a fee. False information had said that MS would charge a fee for this

^ Made possible by the cloud ??

The privacy stuff is just a given, and this squashes all the frenzy about spying, you have opt-in, Kinect does nothing but listen for the Xbox On command when X1 is off. It does not record conversations and place them on the cloud

noone really expected the x1 to record and upload images on the fly.

but if they want to i bet they can access it.

i thought x1 could recognize new players, add them and register them a profile without being prompted? this would be impossible without uploading data to the cloud.

this system also requires that you register with live, or you wont be able to play games at all, even if its free/basic/silver some people simply want to play games not put themselves online, and im betting most games will require the cloud, this will not be free, so that would mean most games come with hidden costs. the only reason i registered with live is for the avatar thing on this site lol otherwise i wouldnt have done it.

this is too complicated, its taking weeks for them to explain, consumers dont want a 3000 page legal eula to read when they buy a games console they want the quick setup guide and GO!! i cant believe they fired that "deal with it" guy for leaking this detail, they deserve to fail this time round. games are supposed to be fun, not take more time to read the instructions than to actually play the game.

i think i will stop talking about the x1 its just making me mad and im sure hobbs is getting annoyed with this debate, but hey man it wouldnt be too hard to turn the x1-hq template into a ps4 site Razz i think the new site will be popular because every dev and his dog will want to hack this thing and make it their bitch.

Yeah no use beating a dead dog around a bush so let's beat a live one instead - xbox live!

Seems pretty simple to me.

Forgot all the plusses?

Well seeing how the xbox live account itself is on the cloud so yeah it will work with it. This brings many benefits that are overlooked it seems. Which are shown in the opening post here.

Your xbox live account is already on MS servers as we speak. Didn't hear much complaining about that. That's why you can recover your xbox live account to your own xbox if need be.

There is nothing wrong with pertinent and relevant data that works hand in hand with the game and the xbox live account being exchanged. That does not constitute spying. I guess just having an account with any company is spying then because there is no difference when you log on their website to update your details, they see that you know. What's the difference if you have an automated program update your data or you do it yourself, there is none. In the end, there will be people looking at your confidential details.

I don't feel either is spying. Some people are acting like aliens have landed and the aliens are taking hostages.

This all just really simple. People are overreacting and over thinking. too bad they will be missing out.

Well, the bright side of the new Sony fans is we already have some candidates to moderate a potential Sony site.

That's outrageous.

They care more about the game companies than the users

I don't see how it is any different than now for trade-ins. The statement by microsoft pretty much changes nothing. Publishers could always require a fee. There's never been any enforcement on that. Sounds like Microsoft is not enforcing it either since they don't care about any fees for themselves. Participating retailers?? That's the same thing as saying partners. This is standard business practices we are talking about. Nothing out of the ordinary. I'd prefer to do my business with a reputable retailer than one that may deal in stolen goods.

Big whoop de doo about the xbox checking 1 every 24 hrs. When I'm using xbox I'm online anyway, big deal. By the way, this check-in thing is nothing for a 56k connection so 90% of the world can play there games on xbox one. The arguments about so many people do not have internet is mute, they can get dialup and will still be able to play xbox one games. Just the cloud stuff would be in question.

it trickles down, some of the most heavily pirated movies have been the biggest money earners for hollywood.

for 2nd hand games, if you know, by word of mouth, 2nd hand games are going to cost more than they do now and require some messing around to buy them, then you are likely to invest in another console, the majority of purchasers will be lower to middle class, they will buy based on the value, the value to them is easy, cheap and fun with little to no additional costs or learning..... ps4.

everyone has been burned at some point.

i remember the first computer i bought, i asked the retailer if it would be able to play dvd's, he said it would be capable. so i took it home and put a dvd movie in it, took it back the next day and said it wont play dvd's can you show me how, he said it doesnt have a dvd drive (i didnt know crap about it then) so i got super mad as id paid almost 3k on it. he put one in for almost free cos i am pretty big and he could tell i was pissed that he minced his words. the point is he still charged me for an 80pin ide cable but if i wasnt so large and ugly he probably would have had more additional cost for whoever he did it to, and those are the additional costs consumers grow to distrust companies for.

microsoft has done it in the past too with msoffice document lockins and costly windows sitewide deployment upgrades because they tell them they need to or their business will fail otherwise. the xbox is no different in fact i expect it this generation basically if you buy an x1 i predict youll have to subscribe to live to play a lot of the better games, costing everyone a yearly fee to keep using their drmbox.

time will tell, they already started out badly and this is the time they are supposed to be making everyone excited to preorder.
