There are several different modifications that can be applied to the Xbox 360's. The most popular is Firmware Flashing, firmware flashing basically replaces the firmware (DVD Drive Firmware tells the DVD Drive how to operate), with a modified one so that your DVD Drive can play backed up games and what not. The most wanted is the JTAG exploit, the JTAG exploit opens a whole bunch of new thing with the 360. The JTAG exploit allows use of unverified XEX files (XBox Executable Files) which will allow you to play XEX files that have not been verified by Microsoft. So with the JTAG exploit, you can play things like Emulators and Homebrew Applications. Although not every Xbox 360 can have the JTAG exploit applied, only consoles with the 7xxx kernel or lower.
