The only way to get proper 5.1 is through optical (TosLink) audio. I too had tried connecting my 360 to my logitech x-530's and had the same problem. Even if you hook your 360 up with RCA audio to a speaker system it won't be true 5.1.

I was under the impression that just plugging it in to my 360 with the rca jacks would make it play 5.1 surround sound. Do you have to get some special adapter for your 360 that plugs into the 5.1 surround sound system? I am probably picking up my 5.1 surround sound system this weekend so any input on this would be appreciated. Very Happy

rca is a form of 5.1 but its more fake 5.1 then anything. For true 5.1 audio you must hook your xbox 360 up through optical (toslink) to your speaker system.

This is what optical looks like

Here is some info about it
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TOSLINK

The reason TOSLINK is true 5.1 is because instead of sending an analog signal to the receiver/speakers (like rca does) it sends a digital one to the receiver, and the receiver then converts it to audio and sends it to the corresponding speaker. As long as your speaker system supports TOSLINK (optical audio) then I would highly recommend it as it really does make a difference (I know this because I went from using rca to optical and the difference is phenomenal) If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Hey how do you toslink from your 360? Is there a special 360 cable that comes from the 360 and has a toslink cable on it for audio or what? Or is that not possible to toslink from your 360?

You need to purchase a Toslink cable separately , after you have it your 360 supports it. xbox.com has a little guide here for connecting digital audio (toslink) http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/systemsetup/xbox360/console/digitalaudio.htm

If your speaker setup doesn't support Toslink then I don't think there is a way to connect your 360 to it. However I will have a look around for you
