Modulate, creators of voice technology that elevates the health and safety of online communities, today announced that it has partnered with ADL (the Anti-Defamation League) to support their Center for Technology and Society (CTS) in scaling its work to combat hate in online gaming spaces.
ADL has a proud history of monitoring antisemitism and extremism online to ensure the safety of Jewish communities and other marginalized groups from coast to coast. Since early 2017, ADL’s Center for Technology and Society has led the charge against cyber hate. CTS convenes key stakeholders such as technology companies, NGOs, and academics to measure and stop the spread of cyber hate. As ADL and CTS continue to expand their research in the games industry, Modulate will be able to apply these learnings in the continued development of ToxMod and other products designed to help studios and development teams fight hate online.
“ADL is thrilled to partner with Modulate to advance our shared goals of a hate-free digital world,” said Daniel Kelley, Director of Strategy and Operations at CTS. “Digital spaces,
especially online gaming communities, offer wonderful opportunities for entertainment and positive interpersonal experiences but have the potential to become havens of online hate, with over 80% of adult gamers experiencing harassment.”
“The ADL’s research has been a driving force in Modulate’s development of ToxMod to fight toxic behavior in online games,” said Hank Howie, Games Industry Evangelist at Modulate. “Becoming an ADL Corporate Partner Against Hate is a real validation of our efforts to address the growing problem of toxic behavior.”
ToxMod is gaming’s only proactive, voice-native moderation solution. Built on advanced machine learning technology and designed with player safety and privacy in mind, ToxMod triages voice chat to flag bad behavior, analyzes the nuances of each conversation to determine toxicity, and enables
moderators to quickly respond to each incident by supplying relevant and accurate context. In contrast to reactive reporting systems, which rely on players to take the effort to report bad behavior, ToxMod is the only voice moderation solution in games today that enables studios to respond proactively to toxic behavior and prevent harm from escalating.
People worldwide are being taught the importance of reusing their waste in a way that benefits them and the environment. Adults are also becoming more interested in reusing and recycling to gain value and make their environment safer. Electronic waste is a kind of waste that needs to be correctly disposed of or recycled; otherwise, it will pose serious problems.
E-waste recycling is essential both at the corporate and domestic levels. On average, people buy new electronic gadgets such as computers and phones every four to five years. As a gamer, this might even be more frequent since you must constantly upgrade your gadgets to optimize your gaming experience, whether playing video games or betting on online sites like Sloto.
What happens when you buy a new electronic? You probably throw away the old ones. The same goes for refrigerators, DVD players, stereos, etc. There are many innovative solutions for disposing of these electronics today. One of the more accessible ones is recycling. Here are the benefits that come with recycling your e-waste.
1. Increasing employment opportunities
The only people with the expertise to properly manage electronic waste have been trained to do so. Telling reusable and recyclable materials from non-recyclable ones requires a sharp and experienced eye. Schools now offer professional degrees and diplomas in recycling and other areas of e-waste management.
Technology company Modulate (@modulate_ai) announced the completion of a $30 million Series A funding round led by Lakestar with participation from existing investors Everblue Management, Hyperplane Ventures, and others. In addition, Mika Salmi, Managing Partner of Lakestar, will join Modulate’s Board of Directors. The company will use the funds to expand its team and continue scaling its groundbreaking proactive voice moderation platform, ToxMod.
“ToxMod is changing the way game developers attack toxic behavior in their communities and this funding is a real validation of our mission to make online communities safer,” said Mike Pappas, CEO of Modulate. “We’re thrilled to welcome Mika and his vast store of experience to the Board as we grow our team and ramp up the development and deployment of ToxMod.”
ToxMod uses sophisticated machine learning models to go beyond transcription and understand not just what each player is saying but how they are saying it - including their emotion, volume, prosody, and more. This is crucial, as what's harmful in one context may be friendly trash talk or genuinely supportive in another. ToxMod uses its nuanced understanding of voice to differentiate between these types of situations, identifying the worst actors while leaving everyone else free to enjoy their own approach to each game. Thanks to this sophistication, ToxMod can detect offenses with greater than 98% accuracy (which further improves over time), and enable moderation teams to respond to incidents over 25 times faster.
“Modulate’s technology to identify toxic behavior is light years ahead of anything else in the market,” said Mika Salmi, Managing Partner at Lakestar. “We at Lakestar are excited to be a part of Modulate's mission to stop toxicity in games and in other social applications.”
Modulate is a team of world-class audio experts, gamers, allies, and futurists who are eager to build a better online world. For additional perspective on the announcement and to learn more about the company, read today’s blog post or visit Modulate.ai.
