coherence (@coherenceio) announced a new collaboration with game developer Gardens, who recently revealed that they received $31.3 million in funding on the back of an impressive playable demo shown behind closed doors at GDC.
Multiplayer is a fundamental part of Gardens’ in-development ARPG and the team have been using coherence’s revolutionary network engine from the outset, allowing what began as a small team to create a multiplayer RPG experience that wowed investors like Lightspeed Venture Partners and Krafton.
Gardens is composed of a team of talented developers who have worked on titles like Journey, What Remains of Edith Finch, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Ultima Online, Outer Wilds and more. With their new Action RPG, they are building on multiplayer ideas and lessons from titles like Journey, delivering an adventure set in a gorgeous fantasy wilderness with multiplayer co-op elements that emphasize tactile interactions between players as they collaborate to navigate the world, solve puzzles and awaken dormant magic.

coherence offers developers a powerful set of tools that allows them to have working multiplayer prototypes running in a matter of minutes. It is open, easy-to-use, and highly scalable, offering everyone from the world’s biggest studios, to small indie teams, a highly-intuitive and streamlined way of creating, testing and deploying real-time multiplayer games.
With the release of the 1.0 version of coherence, a number of exciting new features are being added. Most groundbreaking is the support for players or developers to self-host their games without requiring the use of any centralized server infrastructure. coherence combines the ability to do costless self-hosting with innovative coherence exclusive features coming in the planned roadmap, only possible on the coherence flexible architecture. This will open up a variety of possibilities not seen before. Besides this, there is also a new lobby room system providing matchmaking and lobby services, a revamped network manager, support for very large game worlds, full control over persistence data, TCP fallback, which allows a graceful fallback to TCP where the default UDP communication is not possible, for example on mobile phones, Sample UI 2.0, which expands the set of connection dialog implementations developers can import, own and customize, and more.
Developers can also look forward to news on the broadening of coherence compatibility beyond its current full Unity integration, details on partners using the tech to create incredible multiplayers experiences, as well as information on the roadmap for the powerful network engine in the near future.

Moon Beast Productions, the independent games developer founded by industry veterans Peter Hu and Phil Shenk, has announced the appointment of Erich Schaefer to their executive team as Chief Creative Officer. Erich will be leading the creative direction on Moon Beast’s unrevealed Action RPG project, and hopes to revolutionise the genre alongside his long-time collaborators from Blizzard North.
Erich Schaefer previously founded four development studios: Blizzard North, Flagship Studios, Runic Games, and Double Damage Games. He co-created Diablo I and II, the Torchlight and Rebel Galaxy franchises, serving as Creative Director and Lead Designer. He is also responsible for Hellgate: London, but he survived, phoenix-like, and now has unlimited powers.

Ahead of the studio’s attendance at GDC 2023, the team is preparing an early prototype to show to select prospective partners.
Publisher 2K and developer Visual Concepts revealed that WWE 2K23, the next game in the popular wrestling series, will be available for Xbox Series, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC via Steam on March 17th.
In celebration of his 20th anniversary as a WWE Superstar, 16-time World Champion, Hollywood icon, record-setting philanthropist, and WWE 2K23 Executive Soundtrack Producer, John Cena, will be featured on the cover of each edition of the game, striking three of his signature poses. Global music phenom Bad Bunny - Billboard's Top Artist of the Year and one of the most streamed artists in the world for 2022 - will also make his WWE 2K debut.
WWE 2K23 features several franchise advancements, including a unique new take on the 2K Showcase, the WWE 2K introduction of the fan-favorite WarGames, and expansions to several marquee game modes. In addition, fans can also look forward to a deep roster of WWE Superstars and Legends including Roman Reigns, “American Nightmare” Cody Rhodes, Ronda Rousey, Brock Lesnar, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, and more. Incredibly realistic graphics, animations, camera angles and lighting, plus accessible controls and a new optional pinning mechanic will add to the highly immersive experience.
WWE 2K23 features several hallmarks of the franchise, as well some new additions and twists on fan favorites:
2K Showcase Starring John Cena: Conquering John Cena in the ring is an accolade few Superstars can claim. In an unprecedented twist on the 2K Showcase, players will step into the boots of several of Cena’s toughest competitors with one goal in mind: defeat the man who will “Never Give Up.” Spanning his 20-year WWE career and narrated by Cena himself, this interactive sports entertainment documentary uses 2K’s unique Slingshot Tech for a seamless transition from gameplay to live-action footage to bring pivotal moments in each match to life;
WarGames: The fan-favorite, chaotic and action-packed WarGames makes its debut in WWE 2K23 and delivers heart-pounding 3v3 and 4v4 single player or multiplayer mayhem inside two side-by-side rings, surrounded by a double-steel cage;
MyGM: Now featuring more GMs to choose from – or a player’s own custom GM creation – as well as additional show options, multiple seasons, expanded match cards, and more match types for up to four players. Players draft a roster, manage budgets, sign free agents, choose various match types, arena locations, production elements and more, with the goal of beating a rival GM in weekly ratings battles;
MyFACTION: Now featuring online multiplayer action, the team-building mode in which players collect, manage, and upgrade an array of WWE Superstars and Legends to create their ultimate four-person factions returns. Players can now take their faction online and compete for global dominance, or compete in Weekly Towers and Faction Wars, while new themed card packs and goals roll out regularly throughout the year;
MyRISE: Aspiring Superstars walk through the curtain for their WWE debut in MyRISE and shape their career with the decisions made along the way. Featuring distinct men’s and women’s division storylines and the ability to import custom created Superstars, players journey from the humble beginnings of a Rookie, to being immortalized as a WWE Legend;
Universe: The ultimate WWE Universe sandbox that puts players in charge of their own version of WWE, from Superstar rosters, feuds, champions, weekly shows, and Premium Live Events! Updates to Universe include a reworked story system and more;
Creation Suite: A signature feature of the WWE 2K franchise, the creation suite returns with cross-platform community creations, including the ability to design custom Superstars, GMs, arenas, entrances, move sets, championships and more. Custom arenas are now playable online, and advanced customization has been added to created entrances.
In Vengeance Is Mine, players step into the shoes of Gabriel Jaeger who was brutally executed by three time travelers heading back to 1664, to obtain an old piece of technology that will allow them to operate the Deacon - a derelict military installation buried under the streets of New Amsterdam. Charles Jaeger, now in full control of the Deacon, rallies his flock to meet their spiritual leader Robert Wright beyond the horizon of space and time. His only problem is Gabriel. Barely making it out alive, Gabriel is in control of the prototype HYDRA mech suit and ready to wreak his revenge.
Merciless melee mech combat is augmented with a time-manipulation mechanic that adds a fascinating twist to encounters. Thanks to the capabilities of the HYDRA mech suit, the player will have the ability to speed up time and blink towards unsuspecting enemies, or rewind time to readjust combos or evade death. HYDRA also comes packing an energy-based projectile weapon that allows you to take on foes at distance.
Experience all of the carnage in Vengeance is Mine to a killer soundtrack, featuring music from Queen, Giorgio Moroder and Stefanie Joosten. Moroder and Joosten have come together for the first time, putting their legendary talents to use to record the title song for the game, making for one truly epic track.
Vengeance Is Mine will be completed in 2023 and will launch in 2024 on Xbox Series X|S, PS5 and PC!
