The “Hot Tracks” major update for the military online action War Thunder is now available bringing new visual effects for ground and naval vehicles, the Italian helicopter tech tree, legendary battlecruisers Von der Tann and HMS Invincible, as well as a many other new military vehicles.
The new caterpillar tracks on War Thunderarmoured vehicles consist of separate segments, each of which has physically accurate properties. When passing over humps and potholes, the caterpillar bounces on the wheels. During acceleration and braking, it tightens or whips, and also sways for some time after the vehicle stops. When a shell hits a track, the track breaks exactly at the segment where the impact hit. If a tank drifts on stone or concrete, or turns sharply on asphalt, the all-metal track will give off a sheaf of metal sparks. The update currently brings new tracks for selected popular ground vehicles, while others will get the upgrade later.
The previous major update brought new fire effects for aviation, this time ground and naval guns got a similar overhaul. The Dagor Engine that powers War Thundernow also generates small landscape-native objects, like rocks, pebbles, debris, plants, moss, mushrooms, placed on the scene using only the GPU to make the landscape look more natural. All these visual updates would probably be better to test using one of the new ground vehicles, i.e. the long-awaited top Chinese ZTZ99 MBT or the Japanese ST-A3 medium tank with an auto reloading mechanism.
The new Italian helicopter tech tree enters the game and introduces three machines. Although the AB 205 A-1 is just a modification of the well-known US UH-1H “Huey” helicopter, both the A109 EOA-2 and the A129CBT Mangusta are great examples of Italian engineering original design. Mangusta is especially interesting because it was the first attack helicopter both designed and produced in Western Europe. Nowadays it’s a part of the Italian and Turkish armies' arsenal and has been deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq. The Mangusta is armed with a 20mm autocannon and carries a good arsenal of both guided and unguided weapons, including Stinger air-to-air missiles and Hellfire II ATGM’s.
Jet fans are also getting several signature machines, like the Buccaneer S.2 “Banana” attack jet, the carrier-based A-7 Corsair II attack jet (one of the first US aircraft with a HUD) and the F-84F Thunderstreak fighter jet. Fun Fact: Richard Bach, author of the ‘Jonathan Livingston Seagull’ novella, was a pilot in the F-84F Thunderstreak during his service in Europe.
The blue-water navy in War Thunder has gained two ships that participated in the Battle of Jutland, which was the greatest World War 1 naval battle.

FBI Pays a Visit
This game is rated M for… Mushroom cloud?
We joke, of course.
But the FBI recently paid a visit to a Texas gamer who was attempting to build a small nuclear reactor in his basement. They were accompanied by local cops as well as officials from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
The man, described by NBC-5 as an “out-of-work computer whiz who redesigns (GP: mods, perhaps?) video games” is apparently a science buff with a fascination for all things nuclear.
The FBI searched his home but found no cause for concern. The feds did, however, take the man’s reactor project with them when they left, at the request of his parents.
Why did the young man embark on such a project? He told the TV news:
[Radiation is] in your tap water, you know, in the dirt. You could hold a Geiger counter up to a banana and get a count off of it. People do it in universities all the time. It’s just not usual that somebody does it outside of a university.
Authorities were alerted following a blog entry in which the man described possessing uranium and indicated that the background radiation of his home had doubled. Of the raid on his home the gamer-turned-scientist said:
[FBI agents are] just doing their job. That’s their job to come and check on stuff like that. When they left, it had been deemed that, you know, everything was within reason…. I think I’ll keep it cool for awhile.
GP: It’s interesting that the TV news report makes so much of the man’s gaming, even showing him playing Call of Duty 4 at his PC.
Aykroyd, Ramis-penned successor to classic franchise to feature Murray, Hudson, Potts, and Atherton; Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, Wii, Nintendo DS, and PC due in fall 2008.
Earlier this week, Game Informer teased its upcoming December issue with news that a new Ghostbusters is in the works. Today, Vivendi subsidiary Sierra Entertainment officially announced Ghostbusters will arrive for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, Wii, Nintendo DS, and PC in fall 2008.
Stay strong, Marshmallow Man.As previously noted, Ghostbusters will be a continuation of the original Ghostbusters and its 1989 sequel. As with the films, Ghostbusters the game will be written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis and take place in New York City circa early 1990. Paranormal activity is once again afoot, and the supernatural scientists hook up their latest recruit--that is, the player--with a proton pack to defeat the threat.
Ghostbusters will feature appearances from the original parapsychologists Aykroyd, Ramis, and Bill Murray, as well as the fourth addition to the team, Ernie Hudson. Also reprising their film presence in the game will be Annie Potts, Brian Doyle Murray, and William Atherton.
BloodRayne studio Terminal Reality will handle development duties for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC, while Mushroom Men creators Red Fly Studios will create the PS2, Wii, and DS versions of the game. Ghostbusters has not yet been rated or priced.
