Company says info leak could have "serious implications" for dev calendar; file said to contain information on unannounced games including next Prince of Persia, Splinter Cell.
Confidentiality and the Internet do not mix. Late last night, a savvy surfer discovered a 2GB file from Ubisoft's FTP site featuring assets and images that Ubisoft did not want to see go public. So what did the person do? He or she posted the information on the popular public gaming message board Gaming-Age Forums.
The forum roamers are having a field day with the information, working together to post the alleged screens and information as quickly as they can. Ubisoft, on the other hand, is anything but jovial.
In an official statement from Ubisoft, the company said, "We are clearly displeased that confidential information from Ubisoft has been distributed on the internet. The publication of this type of information can only be harmful to the game development process and we will take all steps necessary to prevent this from happening in the future. We are still investigating the events that lead to this information leak and at this time have no further comment."
We still don't know the US price or launch date, but we've got a bit more specifics on how the Xbox 360 HD DVD player add-on will work when it hits store shelves later this year thanks to a post by Microsoft insider Amir M. on AVS Forum. When Microsoft revealed yesterday it will support 1080p HD DVD and 1080p DVD upconversion we were surprised because it's commonly accepted that the CSS (DVD) and AACS (HD DVD & Blu-ray) copyright provisions wouldn't allow that (although some manufacturers have looked the other way before) via unprotected analog connections.
We were right, sort of. Even after the software upgrade this fall, via component cables, the Xbox 360 will still only upconvert DVDs to 480p, and will play HD DVD movies at a maximum resolution of 1080i. To get 1080p output for movies, you must use a VGA cable, which is not subject to the same copyright restrictions. This just means the Xbox 360 is just like every other HD DVD and Blu-ray player on the market, but you wouldn't know that by reading Microsoft's press releases yesterday.
If you ran out and bought a 1080p HDTV yesterday don't return it just yet, you should be able to get equal picture quality to 1080p if your TV processes the incoming signal correctly, and if it supports 1080p via component you can still play upconverted and native-1080p games . We're still waiting to hear exactly how HD DVD's advanced audio capabilities will be handled by the 360 and oh yeah...a US price, please Microsoft?.
Microsoft's Xbox 360 sales sunk to a new low in recent Japan sales charts.
Media Create Co. on Friday reported that the Xbox successor sold 928 units in Japan.
The 1-year-old system was outsold by hardware like the Nintendo DS, PSP, PS2, Game Boy Advance SP, and Game Boy Micro in the same period.
The Xbox 360 typically sells around 1,100 units in week-to-week hardware figures.
Microsoft this week is showcasing 110 new high-definition games, including the highly anticipated RPG Blue Dragon, Infinite Undiscovery and Namco's RPG Eternal Sonata.
To help boost sales it will introduce the Xbox 360 Core System to Japan for $256 U.S.
In addition, the company will drop the Xbox 360 HD DVD drive to Japan for $170 on Nov. 17, the day Sony Corp. releases the Blu-ray equipped Playstation 3.
Microsoft has sold the least amount of Xbox 360 units in Japan. The machine has sold well in the U.S. and Europe markets on strong action and sports offerings.

We recently had the opportunity to chat with Sony Computer Entertainment America's Executive VP Jack Tretton (right). In Part 1 of this exclusive interview, Jack fills us in on some key data points and what they mean from Sony's perspective. Dig in...
There's been a lot of negativity surrounding Sony in recent months, but the fact of the matter is they're still number one in the video game space. That was the basic message GameDaily BIZ received in a recent interview with Sony Computer Entertainment America Executive Vice President and Co-COO Jack Tretton.
To start, Tretton outlined a number of interesting pieces of data for us, some of which we hadn't previously been aware of. He began by reiterating Sony's belief in the 10-year life cycle for the PS2 and emphasized how the PS2 has been performing far better than the original PlayStation. "If you track like timeframes, 5 and 3/4 years into the two life cycles, we're 28 percent ahead of where we were on the original PlayStation... We did extremely well with the PS2 on a North American basis, on a U.S. basis and on a worldwide basis, and no matter how you put it, we basically trounced the competition," Tretton said. According to SCEA internal data, the life-to-date PS2 installed base stands at 39 million units in America.
