My fishing adventure's.... Published on 10-14-2007
" My dad first took me & me bro's fishing before we started our school years out off blacksmiths beach in his ol glass pongrass drifting for flathead & flounder on weekends.We all suffered sea sickness & remembering him dropping us off behind the surf line when we had enough so we could surf,they could continue fish'n til they returned & picked us up to go home.
We all grew up in local surf life saving club and were confident in the water at early age which would prove invaluable down the track.This went on for some years & my intrest grew more tho was pretty boring drifting round all day chasing lazy flatty's so when i watched a vid called'Insearch of big red"bout snapper fish'n in vic which had a couple of lads catch'n big snapper i conned him into hit'n some inshore reefs for a change.We got a few nice knobbies along with the rest of the reef inhabitants and the odd jew which kept my interest up.
Then i spotted a vid called "goin for gold" which had some keen blokes chasing big yellowfin off montague island in a small boat which had me nagg'n him for a crack @ them out in the big blue stuff.Pops upgraded the ol glassy for a new quintrex fishraider 4.5 which was mod'd,livey tank,extra fuel/floatation and nice new lowrance paper sounder.I still remember that first day offshore game fishing seeing a free jumping marlin,gett'n 2 good 'fin,some nice reds & a big mako that cruised up the trail 9miles east of swansea @ a place called the FARM.This kicked off some memorable trips in the quinny which stayed in the water more than out.
I made a good mate in jmccloy who's grandad happend to own a big cresta 56 called'Condor'which he took us out on for the next few years.We crossed paths with all manners of gamefish and i learnt more valuble lessons from the sea.As we got into party mode and girls i still managed to go fish'n off the local lbg platforms and beaches chas'n salmon,tailor,kings and any other quarry me n mates crossed rods with.I secured apprenticeship roofing and lucky me the boss owned a 31 berty neptune which he let me fish on with his crew.Some memorable incidents were a 3hr fight with a 200kg+ blue marlin in golden lure gamefish'n comp @ port macquarie which was lost on the trace due to a hungry pack of bronze whalers & also a 9 hour battle with a estimated 800kg white pointer,1993 interclub comp @ port stephens which won its freedom after my foreman couldnt take any more on 37kg tackle and submitted to fatigue.From there i got back into offshore stuff with my lil bro who had somehow managed to borrow dads boat for 2years and we made some good captures up the bay way on lil blacks,big dollie,snapper to 12kg and a few wild trips chas'n mako's in late september's.
Work commitments called for a move to oberon and i done some trout fish'n at thompsons creek dam and oberon.which was pretty challenging and also had a great session on lil rainbows @ jenolan caves.that lil creek downstream is full of trout tho we only got bubba's we saw som very big trout up in rugged terrain between the lower access & upper weir.I sprung a young fella n family life called but couldnt drag me away from the briney for too long and i was back chasin kings and jew off local beaches/rocks.
I also got into spearfishing which helped me with my angling adventures tho a downside in this period were those filthy kingy traps.One was costantly full of rat kings tho a few big hoodlums who got too curious felt the whack of my speargun.This pattern continued til Land based addiction hit the shelves and me and good mate greg flett were in beakie mode on our local ledges every weekend.I had another young fella and settled down a bit only fish'n when i needed a feed or got an invite out gamefishing for the day.
Work commitments had me in sth sydney/maroubra for 12 mths where i got into drummer and luderick fishing off yella rock and that other crack'n ledge just round the corner 2 the north.I also got some whiting off maroubra beach and got a few crays here n there.Back up newy i couldnt stay put so after reading"The hungry ocean" bout longline sword fishing i was off to bunderberg for a site on longliner that was work'n south towards home.She looked the goods but in hind site was a very dangerous vessel with severe stability issues and a nut case of a skipper & crew.Too late to ***** bout it 150 miles east of fraser island on recorder sea mount and after one shot in wich the only decent fish we got{140kg nthrn bluefin}{na lads not same species as longtail}i gaffed clean in the shoulder resulting in a couple smacks in the mouth.How was i spose 2 know.every game fish i gaffed that was the spot.didnt realize i cost em quite a few $.Any way we winched up rest of gear and our big german skipper told the head deckie to steam south for 24hrs.Off he went and locked his cabin.well bout 5 hours l8r we get a priority gale warning and a deep low forming east of brisbane.Tell the skip and he says steam thru it.Well after the sea got up round 6 metres and foaming on top in 70knt blow me and only deckie that wasnt off there chops on god knows what lock the wheel house & steam straight for brisbane.It is the only time i have been afraid @ sea and when we punched a big green one that went straight over the wheel house and took beacons,airials,boxes of floats/hooks,busted two windows in a 6mm 2 story wheel house on a 24metre steel hull vessel i actually thought we were goners.We limped into brisbane and i got my **** and went home.
Back in newy fletty had been into the lbg thing still but was more focused on spinning up flatty's and bass.So he took me bass'n and opened another avenue for my rec fish'n.I also managed to get a ride as an observer for the 2003 ABT bass grand final and my boater les smith got some whopping big bass.Me and fletty hit this pretty hard for a while and still do 2 day.
The salt kept drawing me back.My bro got a site in mackay live trout fishing & i jumped @ the opertunity too go.This was the best commercial fish'n job i have done.I took my board & spear'n gear and they gave me a dory 2 fish out of on 10-15 day trips which were good$ earners and enabled me to get some prime fishin n surf'n whilst gettn paid.I started study for my master5/med3 as bein a skipper was the way to go.What a classroom the great barrier reef out to cato,wreck,sumarez reefs provided fond memorys and a healthy bank account too boot.The owners sold out too a buy back tho n me n me bro went and fished the impoundments west of mackay and proserpine where we got our first barra and some mammoth sooties.We both got a site on a trochus boat & went free diving on the outer reefs and swains all the time spear'n,fish'n & learn'n every day bout the sea.Invaluble days on & under the water which still help me with my fish'n 2day.
Home called tho after 8 months & found myself back on lake macquarie this time with a local cray/snapper trapper out of swansea.I had gained my m5/med3 & was lovn goin to sea pickn up his gear n rebait'n it even tho we got bugger all.He was a bit of a drinker & had a habit of crash'n out up front so i would just troll round in his 7metre stssl yella'fin chasing beakies/tuna or surfing off moon island.
No $ cant last but so then i went up nelson bay on the best sea boat i been on"south seas 2" with cpt.wanless on board.This guy taught me so much about the ocean,marine life,safe boating and general life skills.He wasnt a bad fisho either and got some good captures with him...But he got sold out tho not before taking me sports fishing on the longliner out to lord howe,norfolk and elizabeth & middleton reefs.{WE WERE SEEKING REFUGE AND HAD TO STAY AT EACH FOR 10 DAYS}These waters are truly pristine with a mix of temperate/tropical species in plague numbers and jumbo sizes....we hit a good sea out there and had 2 actually heave 2 @ one stage enroute from middleton to lord howe in a filthy blow.The fishing was the most awsome salt water fishing i have ever experienced and is a story in its self.Big kings up to 30kg,big doggies,loads of red bass that smashed us up and trout/sweetlip like yakkas n slimeys.
Anyway that all wound up and i was back spinnerbaiting for bass up local rivers n dams plus a newfound interest in bream on lures after my mate collo got a crack'n 2.1kg bream in swansea channel on a plastic.Me ol mate fletty helped me loads with his bass knowledge and some tips with the long wand{fly} and i spent alot of days out in my kayak chasing bream n flattys on plastics.This was all learning experiences that now form patterns in logs/journals.My lil bro got a crackn jew in lake macquarie that went 32kg which renewed my interest in that species tho i wanted one on an artificial.Still try'n now...mid last year i got 2 big bream in the lake on plastics one was 47cmfork and went 2.3kg.Then a week later i got one 54cm fork which i didnt weigh cause i released it after a zillion photos.2 special 2 kill fish like that i believe plus the fish gods know i done alot of kill'n allready so i gotta be nice 2 them.then late last year me and fletty had a week of truly amazing bass fishing where over200 bass caught & released with average of 1.9kg,several over 50cm & the biggest goin 3.29kg...my pb which i got mounted next to the 47cm bream.Im chass'n jew hard at the moment in the harbour and still hit all me ol spots n species when the urge arises.I gotta thank me dad for gettn me into fishn and me mates/bro for all there valuble input.They dont tell me much anymore.Oh yeah and dad that filthy ol spade headed croc still lives in swansea channel waitn for you to hop a chartruese 3"slider in front of him so ya can have anotherlook at the flatty from hell!{he looks through here every now and again and knows exactly wat im talkn bout}anyways thats bout it for me and if any one wants any info or anythn at all dont hesitate to ask me n i will do me best.still learnin every day on the water.including 2 night.Regards Steele..

Hi m0nster, you have some nice pics in your profile mate. You must be good at your fishing coz i havent seen fish that big in my life. HQ sure has a great bunch of guys here. Hopefully meet up with some of the newcastle guys soon!
