Ok, well thats not totally accurate, the game was never dead, we just have not heard anything from Techland (its publisher) since 2009. It appears these guys have been hard at work building what promises to be one hell of a good zombie game.
Perhaps you are like me and feeling a bit burned out on zombies as of late, but I challenge you to take a look at the new Dead Island Trailer and not get excited about zombies again.
The trailer is not the only thing that has us virtual survivalists excited, but also the way the game is planed to be set up. One reviewer from DESTRUCTOID described it .."
Imagine Borderlands set on the Just Cause 2 island with the Left 4 Dead style of zombies, featuring a quest system similar to Fallout 3 and the weapons system of Dead Rising 2. Blend all of that together, and you get Dead Island; or, as Deep Silver likes to refer to it, a "first-person zombie slasher action RPG."
So what do we know about this game, or should I say virtual Adventure so far?
It is described as a Huge tropical paradise called "Banoi". The island has everything from its own big city to little villages in the rain forrest and every inch of the island is explorable! Though the Island is set up Sand box style, you will be required to accomplish certain prerequisites to unlock different areas of the Island.
You will be able to pick from 4 different characters, there will also be different classes but not sure if each class is locked to a specific character. Multiplayer Coop will also be available so up to 3 of your buddies can jump in your game and help out, Also if playing coop, you do not have to be a different class than your friend, you can all be assassin class if you wish.
The game has been compaired more than once to Fallout 3 with its open world and many side quests. Your character will aslo become better at combat over time with the addition of a skill tree. As a simple regular guy or gal tourist, you will start out quite clumbsy with weapons. You will swing a pipe like a girl, Unless you are a girl then you will probably not notice. Over time you will level up learning new skills and become a skilled zombie killer.
The game does have guns and the such but will focus much more heavily on melee weapons, everything from axes to tree branches can be used. Your character is not super human, he/she will get tired after a bit of swinging and need to rest.
Your weapons will also degrade over time/use and will eventually break and need to be replaced or as hinted at, Fixed at certain areas.
The game is said to be pretty gory to say the least, you can chop off limbs of a zombie and he will keep coming.
Graphics Dead Island will be Powered by Chrome Engine 5 and is said to be absolutely beautiful and highly detailed. Want an idea of what that means? Take a look at a tech demo of the "OLD" Chrome Engine 4 here, and just think...Better than that.
Well all we know thus far is you are one of 4 people that have checked in to the Royal Palms for a great vacation on this tropical island and wake up one morning in a grass hut after a long night of partying to one of your fellow tourists screaming for you to help one of the other tourists that is outside the hut in a fight with some crazy person (Zombie). Thats how we get started. The rest is still a mystery.
Dead Island will be released at the end of 2011 for Xbox 360, PS3, PC and Stream! It is developed by Techland and is being bublished by Deep Silver.
