Weighing in with just less than ten hours of single player game play for a single run, you would think Lost Planet would be somewhat disappointing. This is far from true as it has some of the best boss battles to come to the 360 thus far. You can tell that the game is inspired heavily by games of yesteryear where bosses were not just big enemies with big health; they also had weak points where you could only attack them at that spot in order to damage them. A lot of people complained that the single player missions were simply running to the end and fighting the boss and continuing to do so for a few missions. If they would have stopped for a moment they would have realized that they could defeat what they were running away from and simply explore the beautiful and open areas that you are dropped into with each and every mission.
The mechs, known as Vital Suits (V.S. for short), really add a lot of interesting game play to this game. You are pretty free to get out of one V.S. take the weapon off of its side and place it onto another and continue along your merry path of destruction. Speaking of destruction, the process has not looked quite as good as it does in this game thus far, ranging from the explosion effects to the smoke effects it is seriously one of the best looking games on the 360. It has a much cleaner approach to graphics than Gears of War did, it doesn't seem to want to be gritty or dirty in any way. I enjoyed the graphical style of this game over the style of Gears, some will say that it doesn't look as real since everything looks somewhat pristine but in my opinion that is exactly how a new world should look.
Online play is a great feature with this generation of games, most every game now comes with some type of death match or team based combat. The grapple hook that you may have heard about in this game played a very important role in how you travel around the maps; you can also move off of a ledge and lower down to get the jump on a group of enemies. This normally doesn't work however as they action is very fast paced and by the time you lower yourself they are either out of the area, or they have spotted you and are now shooting your body full of lead and energy. The weapons are definitely based on the future, with guns shooting balls of energy, but also the standard weaponry shooting good old fashioned lead. The energy based weapons drain your supply of energy and cannot be fired once you run out, your only choice when you run out is to find another Data Post which you have to capture or just switch to a more conventional weapon.
The data post mentioned just a moment ago is a very important part in the single player campaign, they not only give you precious Thermal Energy which you need to survive in the harsh environments of this new planet, but they also lead you to the next objective. While you have T-Eng reserves you automatically heal yourself anytime that you damaged. The landscapes you are in vary nicely, sometimes you'll be in an urban area which while open generally forces you in one direction, while other times you are running in a large field of snow being chased by a huge worm that would just love to eat you for lunch. Some of the achievements are tied to killing the mid-level boss creatures, you are free to just run from them, but if you have enough fire power you are able to take them down and cash in on that little bit of extra gamerscore.
Graphics – 9
Some of the best graphics on the system, however sometimes there are just too many things on the screen at one time, would have been nice to be able to see the enemies which are shooting me with the rockets that create more and more smoke.
Controls – 8
The grapple is one of the neatest inclusions in a game of any type, so for it to be in an action/adventure type shooter game was very interesting to me, the camera at times would act weird zooming in at near first person levels, and the odd default cursor movement has new users baffled for a moment when they first pick up the game.
Sound – 9
The sound on this game is great, from the rushing wind behind you, to the rocket coming off of your shoulder into the distance, it really has a lot of different high quality sound effects. The snow even crunches underneath your feet as you walk along, it really impressed me.
Gameplay – 8
The boss battles are really fun, they push you to find the weak points and exploit them however it does get somewhat repetitive. The AI is a bit on the dumb side sometimes, but at other times you are not able to even stand up as they keep hitting you with rockets, thus knocking you back down on the ground.
Replay Value – 8
With the four levels of difficulty and the great multiplayer modes you will be playing this game for at least a few months down the road when something better comes out. It is definitely not a game that most people will be playing five years from now, but it does a very good job at providing entertainment now and in the foreseeable future.
Overall – 9
I feel this one of the best games on the Xbox 360 at the moment, and will continue to be one of the standout titles of 2007. I just am not sure if it has the everlasting potential to deserve a 10, which in my opinion is one of the best games of all time and will be continuously played for many years down the road.
