Fable II Review

Background:
There is no doubt in my mind that most of you have heard of the breathtaking game known as Fable. It was released in 2004 by a company that goes by the name of Lionhead Studios. The game introduced a new gameplay system in a game that was so unique it is a classic to many gamers... including me. Which is the reason I'm going to say this review might be semi-biased, as I absolutely love the original. If you have played the original Fable you will know a lot of the gameplay already... go here kill that, walk into a trap kill the guys, quick get here before time runs out bla bla bla! If you haven't the game is basically a series of fights some intense, some not so intense, and a major choice for players... You see, if you haven't played the original, Fable is basically a Life Simulator, if everyone was 7' 2", could carry weapons that weighed 500lbs. and had the ability to shoot lighting from their ass!

Every action you take in the game has a reaction, or a consequence if you will. If run around killing civilians (the fun part) then people are most likely to run from you in terror, which in my opinion is much more satisfying then killing a bunch of civilians and your only reward is the fact that you did it. Your actions will even change your appearance, giving you awesome horns if you follow "the dark side", or a sissy halo if a "goody two-shoes".

Single Player / Campaign:
If you played the original this game's storyline will give you a major case of Deja-Vu. Basically your a kid, and everything is just starting to go right for you, then your kicked out a window and fall several hundred feet to your certain death, but somehow manage not to die. (kind of like your village being burned to the ground?) Once you "wake up" your all about revenge and want to kill the man who killed your sister. (remember something about a sister?) Then you go on a few stupid mini-quests to gain renown, (once again eerie) then you go to "The Crucible" (an arena... hmm?) to be selected by the very man you hate... (HMMM?!) And end up in his prison where he trains recruits! (HMHMHMHMMMM!?!?!?!) Honestly it's like they took the first Fable and added guns... but still none-the-less a game that is pretty fun.

There are some odd mechanics to the game though, for example if you die you instantly get resurrected, even if you don't have a Resurrection Potion.... their way of "punishing you" is giving your characters a permanent scar! (oh noes!) One thing Lionhead forgot is that not everyone gives a shit! Plus it's so hard to die because of how retarded the AI is... I mean really I don't think they could hit if you were in their face, its so easy to fight because all you have to do it learned some ranged skills and 90% of enemies won't even get close enough to hit you. The fighting system is so unbalanced, but it doesn't mean its not interesting. They took the ambiguous magic list of Fable and reduced it to 8 different spells with 5 ranks. And all 8 spells are "equiped" at all times... the longer you hold down the magic button (B) the higher a rank it will charge, in addition if you only hold down the magic button it will only cast an AoE (Area of Effect) spell, instead if you move the Left Stick it will actually aim your spell in that direction, which really gives the combat system more customizability . The Game is still fun, but really glitchy in MANY aspects... extremely laggy and lacks quite a bit of character customization. It gives you the choice of either Generic Male, or Generic Female, neither of which can be anything but... white. You can still customize some things... like your hairstyle, tattoos, your clothes, and of course your alignments, but not much other than that. All-in-all, the single player is still fun, even though it is pretty buggy. The game tries to be even more clever by giving you a dog, but your dog seems like he'd prefer to run after every single treasure chest or dig-spot that he somehow smells... which he finds about every 5 seconds... its almost more annoying then the guild master asking you if you have any potions.... or food? So... if your looking for a good single player game this definitely fits the bill... but now lets look into the multi-player

Multiplayer:
Now, their original promise of multiplayer sounded excellent! But unfortunately somewhere along the lines a baby puked on the idea, ate its own puke, and then crapped it out. I mean honestly the camera is so shitty it’s a shared camera in an online match... online! Both players have their own screen!! Why share a camera?! Other than that it's the original Single Player with a 'hentchman', that's right... you can't use your own characters online, only the host can. Also the game incorporates a way for characters to use their character's stats, but not their hero. So basically you get to run around with two characters, as long as neither of you get too far away from each other. Frankly, the multiplayer seems forced it doesn't work well and its annoying to handle. I guess one cool feature is that you can modify gold and experience income for each separate player. So really everything you can do in single player you can do in multiplayer! Except with a shitty shared camera and 4 times the frustration! It can provide for some fun events, or random laughs, but other than that the crappy camera keeps you from having much fun. If you’re looking for multiplayer, it’s a horrible game.

Overview:
Even though this game has quite a few mini-glitches and small bugs, its still a great game. It’s fun to design your own character and gain levels even if it is a little to easy. Although the customizability is pretty crappy, watching your character change according to your alignment is extremely satisfying. Playing this game is both short and fun, and you can enjoy yourself while playing it. (which is rare nowadays!)

Achievement Difficulty: 5/10
This game isn't all that hard with the exception of a few achievements that take long grinding sessions to complete. And then quite a few you can get just by playing with someone who has done the achievement or completed it while you were there...

Overall Rating:
I give this game a solid 8/10, definitely worth a look if your into the RP genre, if not your loss... the only reason this game doesn't get a 10/10 is because of it's glitches and the stark difference in graphics from Fable I to Fable II, the characters in Fable II look cartoony as compared to Fable I. So in general, if you enjoyed the first one, you'll enjoy the second one.
