How to Flash Samsung MS28 with NFORCE4!
Published by bobbyk45211 on 2008-08-07

I have just personally confirmed that you do not need a VIA chipset to flash a MS28 drive! I personally just flashed one with Ixtreme 1.3 and it now plays my backup games just fine! So for all of those who tell people you MUST have a via chipset or use the VCC method, you are unfortunately wrong. I have Nforce4 SATA on-board controller and used dosflash to do it. It took me a bit of time to figure out exactly how, but I finally did it flawlessly and fairly easily!

One other thing... I didn't have to wait 10 seconds either to do it! I'm not sure if any other chipset other than Nforce4 or VIA will work though. Maybe we can have some other people test this out with their chipsets...?

I guess I need to tell people how to do this now and then you can all thank me for saving you about 10-20 bucks...lol

First off, here is what I had to use and have to do it...

1) Nforce4 onboard sata
2) dosflash
3) usb flash drive made bootable using iprep with the two dosflash files copied onto it as well.. dosflash.exe and dosflash.typ
4) obviously a 360 with a Toshiba Samsung MS28 dvd drive
5) Ixtreme version that includes a "Make ixtreme firmware.cmd" file

Getting Started

NOTE: Remember to have the 360's DVD Drive plugged into the computer's primary sata port during the entire procedure. There should be no reason to unplug it at anytime. When you have your hard drive plugged into your computer, just use the secondary sata port on your computer since you want to have the 360 drive always in the primary port!
ONLY UNPLUG THE 360 DVD Drive if Windows locks up while booting with it plugged in! I had no such problem and was able to leave the 360 drive plugged into the primary SATA port the entire time. Also, keep the power plug from the 360 motherboard plugged into the 360 DVD Drive at all times!

1) First thing to do is have your computer with Nforce4 sata booted into Windows. I used Vista.

2) Plug in your usb flash drive. Run the latest version of IPREP, configure it for ixtreme samsung, check patch mtkflash, select the first Nvidia nForce SATA Controller on the list(this should be the primary master), making sure that you choose the usb drive as your destination and check the "make bootable" option, then click Prepare Destination.

3) You then need to install dosflash and then copy dosflash.exe and dosflash.typ from the dosflash folder onto your usb flash drive. DO NOT COPY THEM INTO ANY FOLDERS, just right onto the drive so when you boot from the usb drive, you can simply type dosflash at the C: prompt and the program will run. (The C: wil be the USB Flash Drive actually since your hard drive will not be plugged in)

4) Next, shut down your computer and make sure you unplug ALL SATA AND IDE DRIVES FROM YOUR COMPUTER as this step is very important! Have your
360's case opened and plug the 360 MS28 DVD Drive into the primary Nforce sata port of your computer. Boot the 360 and computer at about the same time. You will be booting the computer from the USB Flash Drive, so do what you have to do to make the computer boot from the USB flash drive.
Your computer will boot up to a C: prompt.

5) Type dosflash.

6) During the scan for the MS28's ports, it will ask if you want to resend the MTK vendor intro command. Press “y” and enter.
After you type "y" and hit enter, you should see a list of available drives. If you unplugged all of your computers other drives, you should only see one option with any description after it. It should say TS-H943 after one of the choices and this will be the one you choose.

7) Enter the number to the left of the TS-H943 choice, then hit enter.
You will now see something along the lines of 0X50, which may possibly alternate from some numbers like this to another set of numbers, back and forth they may switch. You now need to shut off your 360 for a couple seconds, then restart the 360 again and access should be granted.

8) Dos flash will now ask if you want to: [R] Read, [W] Write or [E] Erase.
Type R then hit enter.

9) It will now ask for a backup file name, type ORIG.bin and hit enter.
It will then say “Reading Bank 0...... OK!” all the way to Bank 3.
The entire Reading process should take 2mins max. If the First Bank hasn’t moved by the 2 min mark, restart the process. Once successful, turn off the 360 and the computer.

10) Plug your hard drive back in and boot back into Windows. You then need to copy the orig.bin file from the USB flash drive into your folder with an ixtreme version that has a "Make ixtreme firmware.cmd" file included.

11) Double click the "Make ixtreme firmware.cmd" file and it will produce your hacked firmware file. Make sure you write down the exact name of the hacked firmware file that was created!

12) Copy the new hacked .bin file that was created back onto the usb flash drive and shut down the computer. Unplug the hard drive again, reboot both the 360 and the computer again, making sure to boot from the usb flash drive, and wait for the C: prompt again. Now its time to flash your MS28 with the new firmware you just created!

13) At the C: prompt, type dosflash.

14) Type "y" again and hit enter. You should see a list of available drives. If you unplugged all of your computers other drives, you should only see one option with any description after it. It should say TS-H943 after one of the choices and this will be the one you choose.

15) Enter the number to the left of the TS-H943 choice, then hit enter.
You will now see something along the lines of 0X50, which may possibly alternate from some numbers like this to another set of numbers, back and forth they may switch. You now need to shut off your 360 for a couple seconds, then restart the 360 again and access should be granted.

16) Dosflash will then ask if you want to: [R] Read, [W] Write or [E] Erase.

17) Press “W” and enter.

18) It will then ask for the new Firmware’s location.

19) Type the name of the hacked firmware that was created which you wrote down and hit enter. (Will be something like ix13.bin)

20) The drive will then begin erasing the firmware. Once this is done it will say “Writing Bank0... OK!” all the way to bank 3.

After writing has finished, turn off your 360 and your computer. Unplug the sata cable from the back of the 360 drive, replug the 360 motherboard sata cable, and reassemble your 360. Don't forget to replug all your computer drives again that you had unplugged as well! You are now ready to play your backup games! And guess what!? You didn't have to go buy a VIA card! Glad I could save you a little bit of money and prove all the people wrong that said you couldn't flash an MS28 without a VIA card or the VCC method! Amazing what a little hard work and dedication can achieve!
