Hi guys... I normally post on the original xbox forum but I now have a need to do some light tinkering with my 360. if I explain what I want to do:

I want to buy the new 360 250gb slim console bundle thats coming out closer to the holidays which comes with the Kinect and Kinect adventures. To do that I need around £329.99. So I spoke to Gamestation and they offered me a pathetic £65 for my Elite Bundle in trade. So I have decided I will sell it on ebay, get hopefully over £100 if I make up a good bundle with a couple games I don't want.

problem is I may not have the old console when I get the new one so I won't be able to perform the transfer in the normal way. Does the transfer work if you move everything over to a pc using a memory stick? I know they are compatible with 360 now but not sure if I could move the stuff to my pc then back onto the mem stick and thus back onto the 360 that would be awesome but I only have 1 8 gb stick and don't really want to shell out on 2 or 3 more.

I found this link:
http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-connect-your-xbox-360-hard-drive-to-your-pc/

I have extensive experience using Acronis to take images of harddrives from both SATA and IDE drives, I have the software and a sata/ide - usb connector jobby. Is it possible for me to take a complete image of my current 120gb hdd then restore it onto the new 250gb one? I also know how to extend the partitions so that the difference between 120 and 250 wont go unused, using the dos prompt "Diskpart" this may solve my problem. Has anyone heard if this is possible at all?? I have the necessary equipment and software to get the 120gb hdd out of its case. any thoughts? thanks

Sorry for the long post!!

The partitions and file structure in general are a bit different than your standard Fat/NTFS partitions. The best option would be to use a program like Xplorer to grab an image of the hard drive, or even just copy the files directly from the drive using that program.

For the 120gb use this:

http://www.360-hq.com/download-file-135.html

The had to do a hack to enable the 250gb hard drive, to put the files back you'll need to use this one:

http://www.360-hq.com/download-file-207.html

I haven't done this with the 250 version, so I'm not sure if you can just use the 250gb version to pull and copy, or if you have to use each one separately. Either way tho, you should be able to pull either an image off of the drive, or the individual files.

This requires you to open up your drive casing, to access the drive inside. Thus voiding the warranty on the said drives. But it leaves the system warranty intact as you never send the hard drive in for warranty service.

There are accessories that you can buy/make to hook it up via other methods, codejunkies/datel makes both the XSATA and the Xport, which allow you to connect via usb. The XSATA sits between the hard drive and the 360 and draws the power from the system, the xport is more of a desktop tool that you would use away from the xbox. As far as making these, i'm not sure exactly how you would go about it without some crude cable splicing and pin connecting, would be best off just opening it up and connecting it directly via SATA inside your pc.

awesome thanks for the suggestion. So its not a simple image process it requires other programs? Is it worth me trying it with Acronis?? The other question was, will it work in terms of my licenses to my dlc and XBLA titles? Or will xbox live throw up a red flag when I try to access live from a different 360??

In your opinion would the safer option be to just back up my save files and redownload everything else when I get the new console?

In order to ok your new xbox to play your games and such, you need to go to this link to migrate all of your licenses. I would just transfer everything, and then migrate, should not have a problem!

http://www.xbox.com/en-us/support/systemuse/xbox360/licensemigration/

I wouldn't bother with any other imaging programs, as the programs I mentioned (also Xport360 by codejunkies will do this too) are just as good and built for this purpose.

If you want a little more option. This one seems to be more of an all in one, where as I'm unsure on the others if the 250gb version works with older drives, this one says it does for sure.

Edit: Also it's never a bad idea to backup your saves to a USB drive, "just in case" if you have a spare one that you could dedicate to the 360 for the time being.

I think I will probably just backup my game saves and a few other bits and then just redownload everything when the new 360 arrives, it sounds like it will be a lot of hassle and its possible that Microsoft could learn that I've done something because of the conflict between console ids etc. We shall see. I will test out the mem card thing tonight and come back to you. thanks!

Hey Ultrapro, I think your final idea is probably the best way to do things. I'm pretty sure you can see from other posts that others have had problems with migrating and others have not. But since you are planning to use the new console online then the way you are talking about is the safest way of doing things. Hate to see your new console banned so quickly because of a forgotten step or corruption. You would not be able to test until the new console is in your hands so corruption is even worse as all is lost.
