Hi guys,

I found this website through google and you seem to have the technical knowledge that might help me.

I have got quite a few films I want to watch on my xbox 360 through my external HD. However, some of the films have no sound and after attempting to play these films, I have to unplug my HDMI cable and plug it back in for any sounds to work on the xbox at all (including dashboard noises). Some AVI files work and others do not, so I assume it is a codec issue. Here is some audio information of some films that do/do not work on my xbox:

blow - does work

0x0055(MP3) ID'd as MPEG-1 Layer 3
117 kb/s (58/ch, stereo) VBR LAME3.97
48000 Hz

devils advocate - does work

0x0055(MP3) ID'd as MPEG-1 Layer 3
128 kb/s (64/ch, stereo) CBR
48000 Hz

last king of scotland - doesnt work

0x0055(MP3) ID'd as MPEG-1 Layer 3
96 kb/s (48/ch, stereo) CBR
48000 Hz

labyrinth - doesnt work

0x0055(MP3) ID'd as MPEG-1 Layer 3
117 kb/s (58/ch, stereo) VBR LAME3.97
48000 Hz

body of lies - doesnt work

0x0055(MP3) ID'd as MPEG-1 Layer 3
96 kb/s (48/ch, stereo) CBR
48000 Hz

I assume that if the codec is wrong, I would have to change it in order for it to work on my xbox. So my question is can you guys please tell me what I need to convert/change to make ALL of my AVI's compatible because it is really bugging me!

Also, could it be something to do with the HDMI wire if I have to unplug/replug after there are no sounds? I am really confused.

Thanks for anyone who replies Smile

are you connected to xbox LIVE with your 360?
Sounds like your xbox needs an dashboard update.

There were known issues with HDMI output for sometime.

Mandatory Dashboard Update for Xbox 360 HDMI Audio Patch
http://www.360-hq.com/article3036.html

When it comes to your AVI files you can easily re-encode any avi files or just install a pc application which will stream/convert files automatically to your 360 called tverysity - http://www.tversity.com

Stream DivX/XviD on the Xbox 360 using WinXP
http://www.360-hq.com/xbox-tutorials-34.html

hope you enjoy the info we have on offer for your 360..

cheers,

hobbs

Thanks for your reply mate,

Yes I am on xbox live gold and I have already got all mandatory updates installed before the problems started.

I think it is a case that some of my avi's probably have the wrong audio codec. How would I go around easily changing that without altering the size of the file?

Also, I cannot stream because I am at university on a non-wireless connection with only 1 ethernet cable, so it is either my laptop on the internet or my xbox, not both at the same time unfortunately.

Sam

Well really its pretty easy if you have a basic understanding of how codecs and everything works.

I use a program called VirtualDub.. Its a video editing app which is absolutely free.. All you need to do is install a codec pack of your choice and then open the videos you are having problems with and re-encode them

Download VirtualDub:
http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net/

Here is a quick run down of what to do.

1. Install virtualdub and a codec pack
2. Start VDub
3. Click File and choose "Open Video File"
4. Now Click on the "Video" menu and choose "Direct Stream Copy". (this means it is not re-encoding the video.. If you want to reencode video you need to set to "Full Processing" and choose a codec etc.
5. Now click on the "Audio" menu and choose "Full Processing Mode" then choose your compression/codec..
6. Save the video using the "file" menu.. Smile

done!

hope that helps.

I also updated our topic on support codecs with your info.

Supported Xbox 360 Video/Audio Codecs:
http://www.360-hq.com/postt2628.html

Feel free to provide any other codecs you are having issues with too.
Once you have used virtualdub to convert or reencode the audio im sure you will be fine!

i dont use it but if u have a home network tversity is very easy to set up and stream various media to the xbox, it can stream avi's and more, even videos directly from websites! check it out it may be of some use. it does on the fly encoding so it should make most things work with the xbox 360!

What video codec are the files using.. Some of those files you mentioned have the same mp3 encoding but one works and the other doesnt.. That means its a video issue for sure by the looks of it.

let us know how you go! More then enough info in your thread here for you to get things working now! Smile

Hi mate,

What codec pack should I download? I want to make sure I re-encode the audio with a codec that 100% works on the xbox 360...don't want to waste my time!

Also, here is the video information about the 2 avi's that have the same audio but one works/one doesn't:

Blow - Works

XviD
Bitrate : 705kb/s
FPS : 25.000

Labyrinth - Doesnt work

XviD
Bitrate : 843kb/s
FPS : 23.97

I really can't make sense of how one works and one doesn't when they are so similar in the majority of their statistics?

See how you have listed the codec name eg. XVID.. We need to know what version of XVID it is.. You can use this basic list below to see what works..

There is also a link to a codec pack i used!
