Hi all
It seems like i cant watch anything from my USB HD without the internet plugged in.
I have a 320g USB external hard drive that i keep all my movies ,music and stuff on and i normally plug it into my 360 so i can watch all my movies on my tv.
When i have my internet cable plugged into my 360 i can watch all my movies from my USB HD fine no problems .
The other day i took my 360 and my USB HD to my Dads place so he could watch a few movies and when i went to play a movie it wouldnt work and a message pops up saying:

" A media update is required to play this content .To get the update, sign in to Xbox LIVE and play the content again. Status code:51-C00DF236 "

My parents dont have internet on at their place so i drive back home and plug the internet cable back into the 360 and get the media update (which it says i have already downloaded )so i download it again and check to see if i can watch a movie ,which i can.
So then i drive back to my old mans place and go to watch a movie and the same damn message pops up.

" A media update is required to play this content .To get the update, sign in to Xbox LIVE and play the content again. Status code:51-C00DF236 "

I have downloaded the media update twice now and it seems when i turn my 360 off and i turn it back on without the internet cable plugged in the 360 has forgotten the media update.

Any one got any suggestions?

That happened to me too when I tried to stream music from my computer when I first got my new xbox. Is this a different xbox than you originally downloaded the update onto? If it is and your using an HDD from the other xbox then you need to transfer the licenses and redownload the update.

Try signing in on your profile even if it doesnt connect to the internet and then run the media. Meaning if u updated on your profile that u signed on line with then thats the only way it will work as it saves the update to your profile side on the harddrive.

Ok i plugged the internet back in and works fine then i pull out the cable WITHOUT turning off my 360 and it is still working fine without the internet. So atm it is working without the cable plugged.

But when i turn off my 360 and turn it back on without the cable plugged in it goes back to same message.

Do you save the media update to your 360's hard drive or do you have a memory card?

You know, I never had any problems with streaming media from my laptop until this new dash came out. Now, sometimes it sees the media on the shared folder but then I get the message that you get. I get the update, and mine still doesn't work. I think it's a problem with this new dash if you ask me. I knew they would mess up somewhere and it would be too good to be true, like always with MS. Confused
