Hellooo,
I have an Xbox360 here, which has a dead ms28 dvd-drive,
I took it apart and it shows quite some damage (burnt, traces ruptured, check pics) !
I got it like this (I only removed the epoxy cause I'll try to solder the SST chip on a working ms25),
tried iPrep 101, detects the type, but reading doesn't work (normal or bad flash method) or stays at 0%,
but the type is wrong: SST(SST25VF040)(Serial) 512KB !? (check screenshot of dosflash)
the 040 code stands for 4Mbit (http://www.sst.com/downloads/datasheet/S71147.pdf), so indeed 4 /8 = 0.5 ... ?!
but it worked to read the flash, but only with dosflash 16 in auto mode,
but indeed, it read 8 banks instead of the normal 4...
is there software to split that firmware file, so I could try to open it with Firmware Toolbox?
but it's probably a fake/false/corrupt firmware file?!
is this because of the damage to the pcb (traces that are gone) ?
or is it possible that the previous owner tried to flash firmware for a SST25VF040 ?
that can't be, why would he have done that, where would he have gotten it from (for an Xbox360) ?
I only need the key so I can replace it,
so I'll desolder the SST and put it in a working ms25... hopefully it has an original working firmware with correct key in it...
-----------------------------
here's a screenshot from a succesful read of the 8 banks (512KB) !?
--------------------------------------------
3 traces are free because of the damage,
2 of them r still connecting,
1 is broken, I connected that one,
but no difference...
is there a way to split that firmware so it's 256 KB and I can open it with Firmware Toolbox ?
what r the chances I can get the key (if its there at all...) out of that firmware?
thanks for any help!
I'll post any progress...
cheers

Hi mate,
ok.. Let me be very vague.. As long as you can read the key from the drive then you can easily buy any drive to replace your faulty drive.
I havent attempted removing chips from the drive myself but i would have thought since the drive is damaged so much you would have all sorts of trouble..
anyway, sorry for my shitty reply but im just getting back into the swing of things after being away sick for a few months.
