Hey guys, I have been looking on the net (and Here) at some realy cool 360 case mods, some are outstanding and I probobly could not do much better so I would actualy like to do something different with my mod. But not sure about one aspect. I am curious if you can use an off the shelf pc drive in place of the standard xbox 360 drive in an xbox 360?.

What I would like to do is go with water cooling allowing me to toss the heat sinks, fans and fan shroud. (if any air flow is still needed for mobo at all I can use tiny hidden fan/s.) I could also then remove the long legs off of the drive (or preferably use a lap top drive).
This would leave alot of verticle room in the case, I would then chop the case down to make it an xbox 360 slim. I would still have to do some creative rerouting of things like the face board ( board with the power button, usb etc) and the HDD. Maybe even breaking the HDD down and putting it inside the case.
I would like to have something about 1/2 the thickness of the standard 360 case.

so just curious if a laptop drive could be used and can you use some other off the shelf hdd to work on a 360? I know there are some very tiney stroage systems out there that hold alot more info.

ive seen this beind tried on xbox-scene.com they just took the dvd drive out and put it in the hd drive case and extended all the cables and whatnot as for using a different drive you can because the dvd drive and motherboard are paired together so a specific dvd drive only works with the motherboard it paired with throught the coding of the memory

Yes mate,

You can use a normal PC hdd in your 360.
There is a tutorial on how to get it ready for pc here:

Upgrade your Xbox 360 HDD Using HDDHackr:
http://www.360-hq.com/xbox-tutorials-64.html

I havent done one myself but i have read that there isnt any probs.

Water cooling can be done too.
Check out TheXboxExperts watercooled 360 here:

im not sure if you can flash a off the shelf drive because xbox only uses certain drives but this reqires a mod chip to be installed and then you run the risk of getting banned from live so its not worth it in my opinion

Thanks guys,

It will be fun working out all the head ache stuff, I think the biggest obstacle will be cooling.
I would like to water cool, but having a small slim case with a bulky cooling box next to it kind of defeats the idea of a small slim xbox. If I could rig a small water cooling system that can fit in the case that would be awsome but would have to be creative to use available space, Would probobly have to make something from scratch.
If not I will go with a creative home made heat sink system and fans.

I want every thing to be just the one slim case, I seen one guys system on the net, very slim and creative, but he had to put his DVD drive and HDD together in a case that was a 360 HD player. so he has a cool slim 360 but a bulky HD case that has to be with it all the time.

I think I will start on it in a couple months. That will give me time to save up some cash, do some research, etc.
