Somebody told me the other day that there was a rumor that Microsoft had figured out a way to ban moded 360's from Xbox live.. I know this is highly unlikely but has anyone else heard this?

As of right now, I've heard nothing supporting that. I'm sure they can detect flashed firmwares, hell the creator of it stated its very easily detectable. I have no clue as to what m$ has up their sleeves, for how they will crackdown on it in the future.
Trust me bill will not stand around much longer. If you value your live account, I would not use it with a flashed drive period. Better safe then sorry.

Personally I think if Microsoft could have done something they would have done it a long time ago. Another thing to consider is not everyone that has a modded Xbox is a pirate, some people like to back up their original games so they can keep their originals in pristine condition after all, the games are an expensive investment. Also how much would Microsoft lose out on by banning thousands of accounts? not to mention the potential legal backlash? To sum things up i think it's check mate for Microsoft.

Protocool has a point, they would lose millions of dollars by banning all of the people who use backups with their flashed drives. And the investment in these games is very high, he may not see it being a billionaire, but the $60-a-game price will burn a hole in your pocket quite quickly if you keep getting your games ruined. _________________________________________________________ Death becomes you.

Its already been documented that they have banned people with flashed drives, that pirate games. A few of the points leaders a while back were banned due to the use of modified consoles. They can and will do it, just seems to be some kind of policy in effect at the moment regulating it.

All that has to be said here, is look at the original xbox, once it was cracked they banned anyone found using it from live. I think there is some type of agenda M$ is playing by at the moment, and this is the only reason they haven't started cracking down on modified 360's.

Read number 14 in the tos contract here. You agree that you are using authorized software and hardware to access the Service, and that your software and hardware have not been modified in any unauthorized way. Microsoft may take any legal action it deems appropriate against users who violate Microsoft's systems or network security or this contract or any additional terms as described in Section 2 above, and such users may also incur criminal and/or civil liability.
M$ would lose nothing, its in their tos. You agree to it when you sign up for XBL so you would have no leg to stand on. Also think of all the live junkies out there. If they were to get banned, they would purchase another 360, so M$ would benefit from the temporary boost in sales, from banned users acquiring another 360.

some times its not a matter of can they do it but should they do it, if doing it is good for business or bad,
For instance, Sony had developed the technology and was toying with the Idea of making game discs for the PS3 only playable in one console. so when you bought a new game, and put it into your PS3, the disk would be digitaly marked and at that point would work only in your PS3 from that day on, so you could not loan it to your buddy, also this would make rental games for the PS3 impossible.
They looked at this as a way to make more money by selling more games, if you wanted to play a game you would have to buy it yourself. but after some poles on shows like AOTS and others on the subjece, the results were showing that more than 80% of the people that planed on getting PS3's for sure said that they would not get the system if sony used the one disc one console system, so sony scraped it.
