WWE superstar Kane, who entered the professional wrestling ring in October 1997, is quite a different person off-screen. Anyone who's watched the hulking 7 foot tall, 300 pound wrestler, who wore a red mask for much of his career; is likely intimidated by him and his antics on The CW's Friday Night Smackdown.
Those who've watched his Hollywood debut, the horror film See No Evil, which is out on DVD and is also coming to Xbox Live's Video Marketplace; probably feels the same way. That horror movie had Kane killing a group of juvenile delinquents in an old hotel.
But in real life, Kane is a pretty easy-going guy who likes to spend a lot of his free time playing videogames. In fact, videogames are his favorite subject to talk about.
"I was one of those people that started gaming in the arcade back with Pac-Man and Centipede," said Kane. "And then I got the old Atari 2600 with a joystick and one button. The best thing about the home consoles was the Reset button that you could push and start over when you weren't doing so well. I've seen the whole evolution from that to being so excited when Intellivision came out with voice synthesis. Of course, then I moved on to the Super Nintendo and now I play Xbox 360."
Kane's been hooked on his Xbox 360 since Christmas, when he received the next generation console as a gift. He also got Gears of War and Call of Duty 3, which has been taking up a lot of his free time since.
"I'm a big first-person shooter fan," said Kane, who likes the way Epic Games turned the genre around with a new third-person perspective. "I used to play Unreal Tournament on the computer, although I wasn't very good at it, and then I played Unreal Championship on the Xbox. Now I play Gears of War."
Kane has spent so much time playing Xbox and now Xbox 360 that he can't go back to the PC games.
"Now I can't even play on a computer any more because I can't get used to the keyboard and mouse after using the control pad for so long," said Kane. "I don't really think that translates."
Back in the day, Kane was the master of the PC game, Kingpin.
"I was actually really good at it, so that was my claim to fame," said Kane. "I could actually go in and normally win the death matches. What's cool about Kingpin was I was able to make my own skins. I was able to import my mask into the game so my guy ran around wearing Kane's mask while I was playing."
Kane recently moved to the boondocks, so he currently doesn't have access to Xbox Live or online gaming. But when Halo 2 first came out, he spent a lot of time gaming online against people who had no idea who they were fragging.
"I don't think people would say things if they knew who I was when they were playing me," said Kane. "And I think some people probably spend way too much time playing that stuff; they have to be logging some serious hours. Some of the players are just that phenomenal."
These days, with all the travel that the WWE requires, Kane gets good use out of his PSP.
"The PSP is a pretty popular system because it doesn't take up a lot of room," said Kane. "It has the Wi-Fi connections so the guys can play each other. We've had some long trips overseas and the guys will actually get some games going on the PSPs. One of the best time-passes I've ever had on a transatlantic flight was a three-way tables, ladders and chairs match with me playing as myself and then the other two guys were playing as Shelton Benjamin and the 80s Hulk Hogan. We had like an hour-long match. With the portability, you don't lose much in gameplay and graphics because it's such an awesome little machine."
Kane is currently starring in THQ's WWE vs. Smackdown 2007 on PSP, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 2. Gamers can take control of the huge wrestler in high definition on Xbox 360 or bring him on the go with the portable version.
"I've played the PSP version of the game and it's probably the best game on the PSP, and that's saying a lot because the PSP has a lot of good games on it," said Kane. "The graphics and gameplay are great. I used to not be too much into the WWE games because I was never into the fighting games like Mortal Kombat because they were just button-mashers. And when the wrestling games first came out there were like that. But now they've completely evolved into something else with the button combinations and the ability to do reversals, there's strategy too."
A lot of the WWE superstars were logging a lot of time playing games during live events, which caused management to put it's foot down.
"We weren't really banned from playing games, it's just common sense that you focus on work at work," said Kane. "We don't play before we go out to the matches, because there's a time to do work. But when you're traveling, PSP passes the time."
Kane said the more stuff THQ can add to the WWE games, like being able to go into the crowd and rip up signs, the better it is for fans and gamers.
"I can remember when you could kick someone in the head and draw blood," said Kane. "It just makes it unique, which is really cool."
He plays the Xbox 360 WWE game and is amazed at how much detail is in the wrestlers' bodies, right down to the individual muscles moving.
"The WWE superstars probably pick up on some stuff that the average person would not," said Kane. "We're the ones doing it, of course. It really is amazing just how far the games have come."
