Hello. Im new here and new to the world of Xbox. I just bought a used one from my cousins boyfriends brother. Before this my last game console was the N64. After I sold that I got into PC gaming. I know my way around a computer better than the average user. Im A+ and Net+ certified as well as MCP in Windows XP. But I know NOTHING about the Xbox and have come here to learn.

Ive been into PC gaming for awhile and when the Xbox 360 first came out I planned on getting one but decided not to after I heard about the red ring of death (or RRoD as I see its called). I have almost bought one a few times since but always find something I dont like about it.

I heard that there were mods you could do with the original xbox (i do not know what the purpose was for these but assume there was a reason) and I know there are things you can do to the 360 too. HOwever I also know somethings will get you banned while others will not. What can I do and get away with and what will get me in trouble?

I heard you can flash the DVD-rom. Whats the purpose of this? Also heard about JTAP or JGAT or something, what is this?

I need to get a hard drive for it as well. I always thought they were internal and just like a normal computer hard drive, I see that I am wrong about this. I am guessing a 120GB drive will be plenty for my needs and will pick one up soon.

My questions are more "why" than "how". Searching the forum gives me lots of how-to's on various things but they do not tell me why a mod should be done and/or what the purpose is. What does the user gain from these mods? What is the risk?

I hope I have explained myself well enough.
Thank you for the help, I am pretty impressed with the people on this forum so far and I have only been here a very short time. Smile

Hey and once again welcome to HQ-Network.

I am going to give some quick answers

RRoD = Easily avoidable if you buy an xbox 360 with the latest motherboards named Jasper

Modding... You can flash you DVD drive firmware in order to play backups
JTAG is Joint Test Action Group aka IC debug ports, you JTAG you xbox 360 to get access to the NAND and install a hacked NAND (however this is only possible in 360s with older kernel versions)

You get your console banned if MS detect you have hacked firmware ( special if it outdated), playing backups that were not verified, playing games before the release date, etc (It is never 100% safe if your console is modded)

You can also learn a lot with our tutorial section:

Thanks! I did findout that my xbox is NOT JTAGable.

Can Microsoft detect that the DVD-ROM firmware has been changed? I read that they will ban you if you get online with the DVD-ROM unplugged. Is this true? Why??

I read that you can be banned 3 ways, by gamertag, IP address and console.
If you get your console banned can you still use it as normal, just without going online? Is there anyway to "un-do" this ban?

I will be checking out the tutorials section, thanks!

If you go online with modified firmware, you WILL get banned no matter what at some point. This will be a console ban. You can still play games offline, but that console will never see xbox live again. If you want to play on xbox live, don't flash your firmware.

So I cant play online and I cant JTAG it. I knew I should have just stuck with my pc games... Sad

Sorry to hear that Sad that's why I would never buy an Xbox 360 used unless I was planning to play offline or JTAG it.

If I were you I would flash the DVD drive and sell it on Ebay.

Then buy another one, there a lot of professional sellers in Ebay which tell you if the console is banned or not and the DVD drive and motherboard it has.

The good thing of a banned console is that you dont have to worry about getting banned Cool Laughing

You can play as much you like in your xbox, but I would get another console that is not banned.

I always used modify firmware and I never got a console banned, It is all about being precocious. In the last couple of Christimas It is recommend not to go Live between November to February.

This has work with me and all my friends.

However is getting harder to avoid getting banned, the use of a second DVD Drive maybe a good solution when upgrading the dashboard on Live

Dam man, thats a shame, i think you would really love the xbox LIVE community.. Did you test the console online before you modded it?? I always suggest connecting it to Xbox LIVE and getting all updates before attempting to firmware mod. (NOT JTAG).

hopefully you can sell it on ebay and pick up another cheap!

I thought about flashing it and selling it. What could I get out of it if I were to do this? I bought it for $100 (console, 2 wireless controllers and 2 games with no hard drive) and would probably just sell the console.

I have not done any mods to it at all yet, it was banned when I got it.

I don't know how much people are charging for those in USA, but flashed will probably give almost enough or all to get a Jasper unbanned console
