Here is an article i found after hearing about it last night whilst playin with friends on live....

Microsoft is investigating possible fraud on its Xbox Live online gaming service, the company said Tuesday.

The investigation comes after gamers reported having their Xbox Live accounts hijacked and their credit cards used to buy "Microsoft Points," the virtual currency on Xbox Live, which has more than 6 million users.

"Recently, there have been reports of fraudulent activity and account theft taking place on the Xbox Live network," a Microsoft representative said in a statement provided to CNET News.com. "Security is a top priority for Xbox Live, and we are actively investigating all reports of fraudulent behavior and theft."

Gamers have been reporting the incidents for some time in online forums--including on Xbox.com--and to Microsoft's Xbox help desk. Many users of the Microsoft console have been frustrated with the software giant's response to date.

"My Xbox Live account was hacked and all credit card info was stolen and used to run up points...Microsoft says: 'Oh, well, better call your credit card companies, nothing we can do,'" one user wrote on the Xbox Web site last month.

Security researcher Kevin Finisterre was playing Halo on a recent night with several friends when some of their opponents threatened to steal their accounts, he said.

"Literally the next day my girl's account was locked out," Finisterre wrote in an e-mail Tuesday. "I received a message on my Xbox that said: 'We are sorry we must log you out of Xbox Live because someone else is using your Gamertag.'" The account was banned. A "Gamertag" is a person's account name on Xbox Live.

Finisterre said that calling Microsoft was no help and that he got the runaround from the support people who answer 1-800-4MY-XBOX, the official help line. "My account is currently being investigated after about seven frustrating calls," he wrote. An edited recording of several calls he made is available on Finisterre's Web site.

While some users believe the security of Xbox Live was breached, others suggest that users were tricked into giving up enough information while in a game so fraudsters could call Microsoft to change the account information. Users may also have been duped into giving up their account information through phishing scams.

Microsoft asks any Xbox user with a question about the security of their Xbox Live account to call in. "An Xbox customer service representative will help them understand our security policies and procedures," the representative said.

I had this happen on my old xbox once when i was playing halo 2 about a year and a half ago. It said I must be logged out because someone else signed into my account. It took me back to the main menu, which I then tried to sign in again. I signed back in fine and it never happened again. Would suck to have this happen, thanks for the info.

It is things like this that make it hard to have nice sites on the Internet. The more you can do, the more the hackers can do. Now you all know why I am constantly writing security rules on our servers.

People, it is hard to beleave but the number one reason accounts get hijacked in dumb easy to guess passwords. Any password that is short, contains words, or even if it makes human sense is a big no no. It is always better to have a combination of characters and letters with upper and lower case with a minimum of 12 digits. Our servers block IPs after a certain number of tries but if your password is easy, nothing can help you. This is just a side point because I see so many bad passwords with users. Be smart be safe.

Still is is good that people understand the security issues at hand. It will always be a constant struggle fighting fraud and h@ckers. They don't rest and have automated bot scripts attacking everything everywhere possible on the Internet. If they don't rest, neither can the admins of corporations and little guys like us. I view h@ckers and fraud as a form of terrorism and it should be fought tooth an nail if need be.

Bob Marley didn't rest and so we can't either. Thought taken from 'I am Legend' movie. he he

So really it is quite relevant in the gaming world as well as we all use web site and buy things online. Cheers!

On the phishing sites, allways pay attention to your url address bar. the phishing sites can not copy the exact url. for instance if i go to xbox.com. I get this url http://www.xbox.com/en-US/ If I see anything different or added after the us/, I get suspicious and retype in xbox.com in my addy bar to be sure I am on the correct site. This is a big problem on myspace as well, you will be logged in and click on some link there and you get the popup that says " you must be logged in to view this" and you get an official login screen. this is offten a phishing popup. when ever you are asked to put in your info for anything it is safest to first go to your url bar and manualy type in the sites addy to make sure you are on the official page.
