Finely got around to picking up some motion tracking software. Now If I can just figure it out, I think I can make my videos much more interesting.

So what exactly do you mean, can you explain some more about what the software actually does, features maybe. Sounds cool!

The motion tracking software looks at your video and picks out a bunch of points in the video, a dot on a wall, a pebble on the ground, a branch. Hundreds of objects in your 2D video, then it tracks each of those points each frame of video. this creates a 3D tracking plane, you can then place a 3D object onto that plane and they will act as one. Kind of hard to explain,
basically I use 3 programs, After effects, Motion tracking program, and then Cinema 4D where I put all the stuff together. Here is an example, I have some tweaking to do to smooth things out.

I took a scene from battlefield 3, tracked the camera movement to the scene , then used C4D to place simple test 3D figures into the scene. So as the camera moves around, the objects are supposed to occupy a imaginary spot in 3D space. so they should look like they are stationary and i can move closer or further or move around them and it looks like the object is really there. I plan one placing a vehicle there once I get it figured out. This is also used with text in the TV show FRINGE, when they use 3D text in a scene and it looks like it is a real thing hovering there in the sky.

Test 1, Have kinks to work out, not smooth yet and forgot the ground shadows.

But After Effects already tracks motion.

@hobbs without motion tracking, adding a object to a video would be like sticking something to the screen, it doesn't feel real because if you move the camera the object also moves.

After effects tracks but only in 2d. EDIT(After effects cs6 does have some 3d tracking capabilities now and for simple things just as good as dedicated progams, I hear it does not do 3D objects quite as well, I will have to play around with both and see for myself) I can stand infront of a desk and film an empty desk, I can move the camera up and down and side to side and even get shaky with it. I can then motion track a point on the desk.

Now I can take an image of an apple and place it on the desk and lock it to that motion track. Now it looks like a real apple on the desk, as the camera moves around the apple stays on the same spot on the desk, its image is locked to the image of the desk. Up down left right, the apple looks like it is part of the scene. But now what happens if I walk around the desk filming where the virtual apple is. the apple stays in the same spot, but it will appear to rotate and always face the camera.

With 3D motion tracking I can track in all directions, so I place a 3D object, which is made in another program or downloaded and is not an image but an actual object that takes up space. Like a tank in BF3, you can walk around it, over it and see under it, . So I place the 3D apple on the desk in the scene with the motion tracking, now where ever the camera goes, the apple stays, if I go around the desk the apple does not turn to face me, it stays like it should.

Here is a cool example, the guy filmed his hand, then a program tracked and created a 3D plane, then when the 3D object was placed, the program calculated how to move the object for each frame of film to keep it locked to the virtual box.

That is so so cool man, i love how he can place any object in his hand. So this is what you're playing with now huh? If you ever get the time to get a video done feel free to post it up on HQ so we can check out your progress. Smile It sounds very time consuming. Shocked

It can be, even with my pretty nice PC it takes an average of 13 to 17 seconds to render one single frame of video. So if the video is 60fps, that comes out to an average of 15 min per 1 second of video lol.

But I have not even started to learn it yet.
