This is an article from TechRadar.com. let's hope not, that's all I can say.

Quote:
The Nintendo Wii U and the rumoured Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4 will be the last generation of console hardware, according to Nvidia's cloud gaming boss.

Phil Eisler, who heads up the GeForce Grid Cloud Gaming department, says improvements in technology and the lowering of server costs will mean the streaming experience will eventually become dominant.

He told VentureBeat in an interview: "The thing about the consoles … they say this is the last console, and I am certainly a believer in that. The last one is almost 10 years old now in terms of the technology.

"The good thing about cloud gaming is it's going to get better every year. One of the reasons we're investing in it is we see that there are some issues today, but they're all solvable, and they're all moving in the right direction. Bandwidth is going up. The cost of server rooms is going down. We're bringing latency down.

"The experience will just get better and better every year, to the point where I think it will become the predominant way that people play games."

'Better than consoles'

Nvidia has been investing heavily in cloud gaming as part of its partnership with Galkai. Between them, the pair are convinced that cloud gaming is still the future, despite OnLive's fall from grace earlier this summer.

One of the areas the GeForce Grid unit is focusing on is decreasing the network latency to match or even surpass traditional console hardware. Nvidia is also looking to secure deals for more "first-run content."

He added: "The average gamer playing on an Xbox today with a standard television is probably experiencing 150 to 200 milliseconds of latency, and that's what they're used to playing with every day.

"People worry about the network latency, but actually, in the whole pipeline, it's the smallest piece. Our monitors that we work with today are under 10 milliseconds of latency.

"We think that, working with smart TV manufacturers, we'll be able to cut that time down. It's going to be possible very shortly to have a cloud-rendered experience that has lower latency than the current console plus standard television experience."

That doesn't exactly mean they wont have the PS3 out next year though. They just want to keep suckers purchasing the hardware.. hahah My guess is Xbox 360 will launch November 2013 (at the earliest), and PS3 should follow around 12-18 months after.

I hope so anyway, I don't want them rushing it again! Rolling Eyes

You know this won't be the last of the consoles. Not when Microsoft is banking on them for a heck allot more than games. I see the future gaming systems as complete entertainment source at a fraction of the equivalent PC cost.

I watch movies and tons of TV shows on my 360. It's used that more for that than for gaming now. We have the 2 Roku's as well which are dedicated video entertainment boxes. Netflix, Hulu and others suck compared the versions that run on the 360. They put so much more ease of use and extra features in the 360 versions that it's not funny. Why, because of the huge ass user base, the bucket loads of money and it's Microsoft, software quality is top notch as it has to be the level of the overall xbox live experience.

Yup I see the HD entertainment world streaming from consoles more than ever in the future and that included games and I bet Microsoft will be the leader in this movement just like the they have built the best online gaming system there is. That started on the old xbox, was refined on the 360 and will be near perfection on the next xbox.

Anyway, this is just me speculating on things, as nothing has ever impressed me as much as the using my 360 plus the new upcoming 360 enhancements make it even better. I'm loving my 360 more and more. Now If I could just get back into gaming again...

I guess it's pretty obvious I'll be getting the next xbox lol but I'll wait on it in the beginning because we have no clue on who they will use to manufacture the new xbox. So like others have pointed out, hardware quality may be up in the air.

You know, I've been thinking about this, and I cannot come to a decision. On one hand, I kind of want to get one just in case my Xbox 360 craps out on me at some point down the road. That way I'll still be able to play my huge library of Xbox 360 games in the future.

On the other hand, I doubt I'd really ever use it. I'm pretty much 100% converted to PC gaming now. My Xbox Live subscription ran out in March and I haven't really even missed it that much. I may get a month of Xbox Live on winter break so I can play some MW2 and Gears of War again for old times sake, but beyond that I don't see myself paying $60 a year for it anymore.

I've even re-bought a lot of the games I own on my Xbox 360 for the PC. Games like Oblivion, Fallout 3, Bioshock and Mass Effect just play better on the PC. Hell, I had Mass Effect for the Xbox 360 and I hated it. I got it for the PC and I fell in love with the game. I definitely will never buy another RPG on a console again.

Not to mention that most of the big Xbox 360 games also come out on PC at some point. Exclusives are pretty rare in gaming now, so I'm really not missing out on that much content if I don't get an Xbox 720. And to be quite honest, most of the "exclusives" only stay exclusive for a set period of time before they get ported to the PC (Gears of War 1, anyone?).

So I guess considering all of those things, I probably won't get an Xbox 720. There just isn't anything there for me anymore. I really loved my Xbox 360 in it's early years, but I've moved onto the darkside of gaming Laughing

I hope thats in refrence to 3rd party software since M$ can only pirate other peoples work, actual in house software quality is like Bigfoot. Pretty much all scientists agree it doesnt exist Laughing

As for the new console, I'll buy it when I can wear shorts and a Tshirt in the middle of January up here in Canada. When it comes to highend gaming Im sticking to PC. At least that way I can actualy control what parts are used and have the true full experience without some donkey punch in Redmond trying to tell me what I can and cant play/watch/do and have to put up with the extremely lame ads. Justin Bieber ads on 360, seriously the guy at MS that thought that was a good idea should take a bath with a plugged in toaster.
