Do they sell filter replacements? That's the real sure-fire way of getting rid of the smell, assuming it's stuck in your filters. As for the unit itself...mild soap is grand and all, but you might want to go with something a bit stronger. They just say mild soap to cover themselves if someone uses something too corrosive. The soaking...soak or scrub it, whichever you feel like. Just don't use anything that's going to eat away at your unit and cause permanent damage, I can't really make any cleaner suggestions seeing as I don't deal with cleaning products much. Maybe add some heavy diluted bleach to it? That's what we use at the place I work to clean our work area tops, anything that gets touched. It makes everything pretty much odor free, just add a very small amount it to water. At least I think that's what we use. Hope this helps, let me know if you have any luck!

Well Kaz inc. finally contacted me and gave me some info on ordering the new filters... $30/ea.
I used Clorox anywhere cleaner on the filters.
Then on the unit itself i took it apart and used
latex gloves
75% Isopropyl alcohol
Roll of paper towels
Q-tips

Anytime you wish to rid something of a unpleasant smell be it countertops all the way to fabrics all you have to do is use white vinegar. It will not stain and the vinegar smell goes away pretty darn quick. My wife uses this regularly on everything and it leaves the house smelling fresh and clean. Also it has natural antibacterial properties. _________________________________________________________
