Yeah I have heard of it, makes me glad I didn't buy one as soon as I got my hdtv (January I got it haha) I think they will because you wouldn't hear announcements from Toshiba that they were "thinking about dropping it" unless they actually planned to do it. I will feel bad though for everyone who bought the HD-DVD players unless they sell them before Toshiba "officially" drops it

Its just a rumor right now elusiv but when M$ rumors come out they usually are true. If you wait a bit more details should come out soon, probably after Toshiba "officially" drops HD DVD

The bungie rumor was sure real.

On G4 a few nights ago the feed said they were going to stop producing hd-dvd products by the end of 2008 or 2009 (cant remember). Sounds like blu-ray won for high def movies.

Well that is good in a way. I was lucky enough to not have bought a hd-dvd player standalone or 360 add-on. The bad thing is that the blu-ray disc are going to be outrageously expensive for a couple of years at least! Remember when cd's first came out?? They were like 30 dollars for one cd! I was kinda hoping both formats would survive so they would compete in prices. No such luck! Oh well I will wait another year or so before I start getting anything blu-ray as I still have to justify to my wife why we have over 500 dvd movies. Sad

Microsoft responds to HD DVD speculation
Phil Elliott 20:21 (BST) 18/02/2008
Software giant believes that "it is games that sell consoles"
Microsoft has released a statement following the press speculation revolving around the potential demise of Toshiba's HD DVD format.
Speaking to tech blog Engadget the company claimed that the move wouldn't have "any material impact on the Xbox 360 platform or our position in the marketplace," stating instead its belief that "it is games that sell consoles."
The statement went on to say that it would "wait until we hear from Toshiba before announcing any specific plans around the Xbox 360 HD DVD player."
Nikkei news reports today suggested that Toshiba had already decided to discontinue the HD DVD format, and cease all sales by March - a move expected to be announced tomorrow.
In the meantime there has been speculation that Microsoft could opt to manufacture a Blu-ray peripheral for the Xbox 360 - a direction which the company has said in the past it could go in - although it's likely to prefer to step up its downloadable content in line with the corporate vision of content on demand.

Well the decision is in and Blu-ray has won the format war. Toshiba just announced that it will no longer produce hd-dvd players. This folks basically means that anyone having a hd-dvd player is now SOL when it comes to movies. As it is highly doubtful anyone will still make movies on the hd-dvd format. I gotta say though that Wes213 has been warning people for quite awhile now about purchasing hd-dvd anything due to the fact that the blu-ray disc has three or four times the storage space. I guess once again our esteemed colleague was right again. Thanks Wes213 for saving me a fortune! I almost bought a hd-dvd 360 add-on several times but held off due to your informative posts. I gotta say you probably saved alot of people alot of money if they were smart enough to pay attention to your news posts. Thanks again Wes213 for keeping us all informed! Very Happy

Wow it sure came down like an avalanch did'nt it !?

First I heard was about a week ago when best buy said they were for now on going to ( if asked by a customer what was recomended ) recomend Blu-Ray.. Stating that they appreciated it being more friendly for more applications or something like that, then the crap began to roll down the hill and everyone jumped on the band waggon.

The part I love the most is Bill Gates and MS stating that they would be implimenting Blu-Ray into its 360, and I read a news story that the first Blu-Ray 360 will be due out in about a month or so. What is so funny about this is that about 6 months ago I posted a news story here.
Check it out!http://www.360-hq.com/article-1705--0-0.html
where bill stated that the 360 would never have anything to do with blu-ray. Basicly it would be a cold day in hell befor that would ever happen. Something to do with bill feuding with sony or something. well any way it looks like hell froze over. Bill folded like a lawn chair One of the lines from the origional story was "Microsoft has now made it very clear that it will not support Sony, with a company spokesperson stating emphatically that the XBOX 360 will never have a Blu-Ray drive. " well not till next month any way lol.
