It only damaged one disc of mine. It happens when you move the xbox, either from horizontal to vertical or vice versa, while the game is in and spinning. I learned and now I just keep it one way and turn it off before moving it.

because of the front led circle... when its laying down the first controller lights the top-left quadrant to show its connected. when you stand it up vertical the console knows and shifts the led to the "new" top left. lots of people get theirs and hear this, then decide to check it out and show it off to friends. when you tip it up and down the disc tilts into the laser head causing that nice deep ring all the way around
if you put the disc in and play its just fine, mine are both horizontal and have never scratched any games _________________________________________________________ .
