Legendary Publisher Apogee Accepts $5 Million Funding

Legendary Publisher Apogee Accepts $5 Million Funding

Apogee Entertainment (@Apogee_Ent), the legendary developer-publisher behind Duke Nukem, Prey (2006), Max Payne, Wolfenstein 3D, Commander Keen, and many more, announced today that the company has accepted $5 million in external financing - making it the first outside investment in Apogee's history.

Legendary Publisher Apogee Accepts $5 Million Funding for New Generation of Indie Titles

eWTP Tech Innovation Fund’s $5 million investment in Apogee comes on the heels of the original indie game publisher’s public resurgence in March 2021, when founder and industry luminary Scott Miller rejoined the company he started in his parents’ home in 1987. A creative powerhouse that mentored id Software, Remedy Entertainment, and so many others, Apogee’s 2021 resurrection saw several successful game launches, like sci-fi survival adventure Residual from OrangePixel, and even more signings, including the open-world epic Elements (starring Patricia Summersett of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild) and Turbo Overkill, a frenetic first-person shooter from the acclaimed creator of DOOM II mod Total Chaos.

eWTP shares Apogee’s vision for an industry future where undiscovered indie talent is found, elevated, and rewarded for simply giving consumers great games—complete, polished, and purely fun. Their investment will accelerate Apogee’s growth, allow the hiring of additional management and production staff, and make possible the signing of several new games and developers spanning the globe.

"I couldn't be more thrilled by this investment in our future success. I’m especially glad to have met Partner CY Chen and VP of Business Development Jack Sorensen, both of whom impressed us deeply with their understanding of our profession and business goals," said Scott Miller. "Partnering with eWTP has us excited for the rocket ride ahead, on which we’ll discover and bring even more games to the world."

Curve Digital and Swedish indie studio Neon Giant invite gamers to make their mark in the brave new world of Veles, as the studio’s highly anticipated debut title The Ascent (@AscentTheGame) launches today on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles, as well as Xbox Game Pass (@XboxGamePass) and PC at 6pm BST / 7pm CEST / 10am PDT.

Cyberpunk Action-shooter RPG ‘The Ascent’ blasts onto Xbox and PC today

A solo and co-op action-shooter RPG set in a sci-fi cyberpunk world, The Ascent is the first title from Neon Giant, a new 12-person studio composed of games industry veterans who were some of the minds behind iconic AAA titles such as the Gears of War, Bulletstorm and Wolfenstein franchises.

The Ascent sees players dive into ‘The Ascent Group’ arcology, a self-contained corporate-run metropolis, stretching high into the sky and filled with creatures from all over the galaxy. Taking on the role of an indentured worker, the world starts to go haywire when The Ascent Group shuts down for unknown reasons. Life becomes a case of survival, with rival corporations and crime syndicates looking to fill the empty space and players having to take up arms to hold them off.

About three years ago we founded Neon Giant; a small game dev studio with the belief that with the right focus and mindset, even just a few people can create grand experiences and high quality games,” said Tor Frick, Creative Director and co-founder of Neon Giant. “We have a passion for creating living worlds and action gameplay - it’s in our DNA from our shared history in the industry and The Ascent is the result of our team’s passion and hard work.”

The Ascent Shoots Its Way On To Xbox And PC On July 29

The Ascent is the first title from Neon Giant, a new 12-person studio composed of games industry veterans who were some of the minds behind iconic AAA titles such as the Gears of War, Bulletstorm and Wolfenstein franchises. The game will target 60 fps and have full 4K support on the Xbox Series X, offering amazing gameplay performance for new generation console players.

We are super excited that people will soon be able to jump into the world of The Ascent,” said Arcade Berg, Creative Director and co-founder of Neon Giant. We love making games and we do it because we want people to enjoy the experience and world we have created - so we’ve designed a game that lets all players have fun with the element of gameplay that interests them the most. Whether you’re someone who enjoys exploring every corner, loves exciting combat or gets invested in the story and lore, we've tried to put something in The Ascent for everyone.”

Fellow co-founder and Creative Director of the studio Tor Frick added: “A month ago we celebrated Neon Giant’s third anniversary and we’re so happy to be launching our first title just after this milestone for our young studio. We have a very passionate and dedicated team and each person in the studio has brought something new and great to the overall experience of The Ascent, so we’re really excited to share the planet of Veles with everyone and see what people think of the world our team has created.”

The Ascent will see players dive into ‘The Ascent Group’ arcology, a self-contained corporate-run metropolis, stretching high into the sky and filled with creatures from all over the galaxy. Life becomes a case of survival, with rival corporations and crime syndicates looking to fill the empty space. Players will have to take up arms and hold them off. The Ascent begins here.

The Ascent will offer players the chance to step into an action-orientated sci-fi RPG powered by Unreal Engine that takes the genre to new levels, available to play in both single-player and up to four-player co-op.

Game Features:

  • A free-roam play style in a cyberpunk inspired dystopian world

  • Double-aim mechanic enables players to utilise the full screen and choose between multiple targets anywhere in the environment
  • A narrative-led adventure playable in single and up to four-player co-op modes

The Ascent will launch on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One consoles and PC and be available on Xbox Game Pass 29 July 2021 and is available to pre-order today on Xbox and PC for £24.99 / $29.99 / €29.99 / ¥148.
