Got to love it it when art imitates life and in this case it was Electronic Art's release of The Godfather II and the contents of its promotional package, the kit was well put together but im thinking it was not so well thought out.
GamePolitics.com reports: In advance of Electronic Art's release of The Godfather II tomorrow, a promotional package for the game arrived this afternoon. Many others in the gaming press surely received the media kit as well.
As these things go, it's very nicely done: a small wooden cigar box containing a cheap stogie, a pack of matches, a pair of dice and a length of wire (for garroting stool pigeons, no doubt). A few matches are missing from the pack, which bears the scent of burnt sulfur and has a dame's phone number scrawled on the inside cover.
There's also an authentic-looking immigration document with my actual picture attached. Three pages of folded, typewritten notes offer advice from "M. Corleone." The Godfather flavor is unmistakable.
In fact, the kit is so cleverly detailed that I almost hate to point out that one other included item - a set of brass knuckles - is illegal in Pennsylvania, where GP is based:
18 Pa.C.S. § 908: Prohibited offensive weapons
(a) Offense defined.--A person commits a misdemeanor of the first degree if, except as authorized by law, he... possesses any offensive weapon.
(c) Definitions
"Offensive weapons." Any bomb, grenade, machine gun, sawed-off shotgun with a barrel less than 18 inches, firearm specially made or specially adapted for concealment or silent discharge, any blackjack, sandbag, metal knuckles... or other implement for the infliction of serious bodily injury which serves no common lawful purpose.
GP: The good news is that I think I'll be able to beat the rap if I can persuade the judge to consider the brass knuckles a curio, since the law does provide an out:
(b) Exceptions.--
(1) It is a defense under this section for the defendant to prove by a preponderance of evidence that he possessed or dealt with the weapon solely as a curio or in a dramatic performance...
Just to be clear, promo materials like this are sent in the course of my work covering games for the Philadelphia Inquirer, not in relation to GamePolitics. EA, clearly, is hoping I will write about The Godfather II for the newspaper.
Hay all Godfather fans it looks like you might be getting the follow up soon since Shacknews put this post out, the only catch is they do not seem to have any confirmation on what platforms will be carrying the new title so once again it looks like we go back to the waiting game.
Shacknews reports: "EA Redwood Shores' upcoming sequel The Godfather 2 is expected for a late 2008 to early 2009 release, Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello revealed at an annual investor's conference today."
"Speaking on the company's upcoming roster of mature-themed titles, the CEO stated that The Godfather 2 would be arriving at retailers "a few months" after the November release of Valve Software's Left 4 Dead (PC, 360)."
"Inspired by Francis Ford Coppola's celebrated film trilogy, the game will allow players to control their mafia empire via RTS-like top-down controls. No platforms for the upcoming mob sim have yet been announced, though Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 editions seem likely, with a Wii version also possible."
In an article on next-gen.biz we get the low down on EA's plan to possible make not only a Godfather II but maybe a few more games based on the Godfather movies, sounds like a good idea to me.
At the William Blair & Company's investor meeting Tuesday, Riccitiello said that EA's Redwood Shores studio is at work on a sequel to The Godfather game, which was released in 2006.
Electronic Arts boss John Riccitiello said "It's a game that I think we'll be talking a lot about this fall," Riccitiello told investors. "You can play this game both at the street level, much like a GTA-style game, but you can also play it top-down, almost like you're in an RTS, controlling the strategy of the boroughs so you can see what's going on...", being a fan of the first Godfather game i think i like ware this is going allready.
The article goes on to say: "The megapublisher had been talking about a sequel to the original Godfather game even before the franchise launched on game systems. David DeMartini, Godfather's executive producer, said in February 2006 that EA's intention is "to make two or three" games within the Godfather movie universe."
So keep your eyes open for more on this game since im a big fan of busting up some palooka and looking sharp for the dames ya see.

List of Cancelled Cross-platform Games
These cross-platform cancellations are probably the result of growing competition in the GTA-clone genre. GTA IV, The Godfather, and Saint's Row have a large amount of buzz and are probably scaring off less ambitious projects.
This GTA style action game begins with Al Pacino's character surviving the gunfight at the end of the movie, allowing the player to rebuild his cocaine empire. Development is nearing completion on the PS2, Xbox, and PC. The 360/PS3 versions have been cancelled although a PSP version has been added.
Based off of the popular mob drama on HBO, this action game was planned for release on PS2, PS3, and Xbox 360. THQ has cancelled the PS3 version due to lack of dev kits and cancelled the 360 version because it "didn't look all that much better than the PS2 version."
This 360 exclusive features Hitman style assassinations in a futuristic city. Unfortunately because of numerous delays and an unimpressive media response Namco has decided to cancel the project.
Always stay tuned to our Xbox 360 Games area for the most complete info on each specific title.. Our website will associate any forums topics, downloads, media (screenshots and videos), and other areas of the site with the title you are looking at.
Current-gen titles drive market out of seventh month slump
The latest US videogame sales data from NPD has revealed a 15.5 per cent rise in software sales during April, reaching USD 699 million and ending seven consecutive months of decline.
The positive market performance was largely driven by current generation sales of Square Enix' Disney themed RPG title Kingdom Hearts II, EA's The Godfather, Eidos' Tomb Raider: Legend and Take-Two's Major League Baseball 2K6, which was the strongest selling Xbox title in the region.
Handheld software titles also played their part, with Metroid Prime: Hunters becoming the top-selling Nintendo DS title, backed up by strong sales for Brain Training and MLB 2006: The Show on Sony's PSP.
NPD analyst Anita Frazier told Reuters: "The multi-month doldrums that have been facing the industry due to the console transition and the lack of truly blockbuster titles appears to be over, at least for now. We're on the road to recovery."
April PC software sales were up 12 per cent to USD 67 million, current generation software down by just USD 32 million compared to last year, and next generation software sales were up around USD 85 million.
Industry analysts at Wedbush Morgan noted: "The April sales figures reflected a reversal of a seven month software sales decline, although we expect the negative trend to resume in May and June," although the company admitted that X-Men: The Official Game and Over The Hedge from Activision, as well as Nintendo's New Super Mario Brothers would help maintain a positive performance in the coming months.
I can't wait to tell my freakin' shrink!
UbisoftOnce The Godfather became a hit, it seemed inevitable that The Sopranos would be next to rise to power in the video game family. THQ announced today that the Tony and the gang from HBO will be coming to the Xbox 360 and Playstation 2 this holiday season. The game is backed by key members of the all-star cast who will lend their voices and likenesses, including James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano.
I suspect the voice of Lillo Brancato will be not be making an appearance.
The storyline:
A mob war is brewing as Philadelphia's and New Jersey's most powerful families are about to collide. As the illegitimate son of "Big P*ssy," you have been born into the organization and are now being given an opportunity to demonstrate your loyalty to Tony Soprano. As a soldier you must earn money on collections, protect your turf through intimidation, and gain admiration within your own family to move up in the ranks of the organization. Carry out orders from Paulie, Silvio, Christopher and Tony in familiar locations such as the Bada Bing!, Nuovo Vesuvio's and Satriale's. Storyline collaborated with show creator David Chase and voiced by the show's key cast members.
So this holiday season I suspect I'll leave the gun, take the cannoli, and pick this baby up opening day.
North American retailer Electronics Boutique, which expects Microsoft to ship the Xbox 360 as early as November 2, 2005 for an MSRP of $299.99, has comprised a complete, albeit questionable, list of X360 games for the console launch, IGN learned today from several EB outlets.
The list IGN acquired from EB retailers today, features 21 launch titles, including three first-party games from Microsoft Game Studios -- Perfect Dark LE (i.e. Limited Edition), Kameo: Elements of Power, and Project Gotham Racing 3, approximate pricing, and sku numbers for every game.
