L4D2 promises to set a new benchmark for co-operative action games and become one of 2009's marquee titles, adding melee combat to enable deeper co-operative gameplay, with items such as a chainsaw, frying pan, axe, baseball bat, and more.
Introducing the AI Director 2.0, L4D's dynamic gameplay is taken to the next level by giving the Director the ability to procedurally change weather effects, world objects, and pathways in addition to tailoring the enemy population, effects, and sounds to match the players' performance. The result is a unique game session custom fitted to provide a satisfying and uniquely challenging experience each time the game is played.
Scavenge mode challenges players to compete in round-based games of up to 8 players (Survivors vs. Infected). The Survivors must battle both the Infected and the clock as they collect gas cans to refuel a generator located in each map. Every can the Survivors pour into the generator scores their team a point and adds time to the clock.
On defense, the Infected team plays as the boss Infected (including the new Spitter, Jockey, and Charger). They must keep the Survivors from fueling the generator by attacking them, destroying the gas cans, or running out the clock. During a round, each team gets an opportunity to play both sides, with the round going to whichever team successfully delivers the most cans.
In addition to the new campaign and boss monster L4D2 also includes "Mudmen," the "uncommon common" exclusive to the Swamp Fever campaign, and a few more of the 20-plus new items coming in the full product (cricket bat, AK47, and grenade launcher).
Featuring new Survivors, boss zombies, weapons, and items, Left 4 Dead 2 offers a much larger game than the original with more co-operative campaigns, more Versus campaigns, and maps for Survival mode available at launch.
The sequel to a popular video game has been modified so it can be sold in Australia.
Left 4 Dead 2 has been given an MA 15+ rating after it was refused classification in September.
According to the classification board report, the modified version removes considerable amounts of gore from gameplay.
“The board notes that the game no longer contains depictions of decapitation, dismemberment, wound detail or piles of dead bodies lying about the environment,” the report said.
“No wound detail is shown and the implicitly dead bodies and blood splatter disappear as they touch the ground.”
The report confirmed that melee weapons, such as “axes, crowbars and chainsaws” were still in the game.
Electronic Arts also submitted the original version of the game to the Classifications Review Board, which is scheduled for consideration on October 22, 2009.
The original version of the game was refused classification because it contained "realistic, frenetic and unrelenting violence".
Distributor Electronic Arts spokesperson Cameron Jenkins said the company still hoped the original version of the game would receive a classification:
“We are waiting until we get the results back from the resubmitted full version, just in case it gets classified after working with the OFLC, we would much prefer to release that one,” he said.
According to gaming blog Kotaku, Valve submitted the modified version to ensure the game could be released in November and that Australians would receive a free update to the edited version if the original game was classified.

Here’s the “Xbox 1080″ prototype from Carl Archambeault, an impossibly portable console with a slide-out LCD screen. Where do the optical discs go? Who knows? And what’s the battery life? Let’s say 100 hours!
The project is an attempt “to design a hand held gaming device that would combine the gaming power of the Xbox 360 and the music and video power of the Microsoft Zune.” That’s an idea that Microsoft itself is apparently working on, but something like this prototype here would be mighty nice to add to your portable gaming collection, no?
As the name goes, this version of Xbox game console sure is more advanced than the Xbox handheld we saw before or Xbox 360 we currently use – three times advanced! Made by a certain Carl Archambeault, this Xbox design looks pretty “cute” and game and hence, I guess, we would also see the feminine population craving for this item, what do you say? The gadget is intended to sport a Xbox LCD display that slides into the compact machine, making the gadget something to die for.
All in all, this product looks like a mixture of Sony’s the Xbox 360 and Microsoft’s Zune. The creator of this design has made a prototype of such a device, which, I guess is not functional, because, if, by any chance, it renders to be functional, then I would not be wasting a single second more writing for this stuff, and trying my luck bidding for this one of a kind multimedia gadget. Other futuristic design that is worth missing out is the Xbox 720 console, which foresees Xbox in a very new avatar and hopefully, some more features.

One thing is for sure here and that is if Microsoft was going to try and surprise us with the 250GB Elite then that plan is shot to hell, with more leaks then the Titanic I doubt that any one has not got wind of the new hard drive and i can only hope this will end with the 250GB drive being sold separately.
Engadget said: So much for secrecy. South African Xbox 360 distributor Comztek has told local gaming news site XboxGaming.co.za that the a 250GB "Super Elite" model is due there in October. Additionally, the Forza 3 bundle we saw heading to Germany is also en route to SA, retailing for R4,999 (US $646), or around the same price as the Elite before its recent global price cut. South African retailer BT Games has apparently also posted a flier in honor of the launch (pictured), offering a R500 discount on the Super Elite (non-Forza 3 bundle, presumably) with the trade-in of a slimline PlayStation 2, totaling R4,199 (US $541) post-discount, or a 120GB Elite for R2,999 after the same trade-in rebate. Let's hope the folks in Redmond have as much of a sense of humor about leaks as Sony does.
Looks like Valve's Doug Lombardi has set down with CVG and spilled his guts on all things Left 4 Dead, so i will do my best to sum up as much of what was said for the guys out there like me that just want to know the major points and not read over a bunch of pointless banter to get to the facts.
To start with CVG asked about the boycott and what effect it had on there plans for L4D and L4D2 just to find out it had no effect at all, Lombardi said: It really didn't change our plans at all. As I mentioned we had plans to keep releasing stuff. We put the Survival Pack out for free which I thought was pretty cool on 360 as well as PC - it's sort of uncommon to be able to get new stuff out that way.
We're already released the authoring tools and the matchmaking to get that content out to people, because the problem with mods and stuff like that is people make great stuff but then it doesn't really get propagated to the whole community properly.
So we're doing that. And then there's more new content that we're working on that we'll be announcing as I mentioned at the end of the summer.
I think there was just some confusion. When you go to E3 and make a big splash on a new product you're trying to get the retailer's attention and the press attention.
It's not really the venue for announcing DLC and whatnot. I think folks took our announcement as a sign that we were dropping Left 4 Dead 1 and that's just not the case.
Lombardi went on to say: Oh I don't think the fans are spoilt, I think that they're getting their money's worth, right?
We always look at it as, if we were a customer what would we want from stuff? How would we want to be treated as customers? I think as I mentioned with Left 4 Dead so far we've done a pretty good job with the Survival Pack, the authoring tools and there's more stuff coming.
You obviously can't do that forever, both technically and financially there's reasons why at some point you have to move on to the sequel.
But with Half-Life 1 folks got Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat and bunches of other stuff that was free for a long time.
With Half-Life 2 that got Deathmatch right away, Counter-Strike: Source came with it. Orange Box we thought was pretty good value and we're trying to make Left 4 Dead 1 feel like it's really great value and we'll try to do the same thing with Left 4 Dead 2.
For the PS3 fans out there who want to know what they can look foreword to i am sorry to say you will get nothing in this case, looks like the PS3 slips again.
When asked about the PS3 cut of L4D2 Lombardi said: The first thing that comes to mind is changing the finales at the way they work. That wasn't on the original list, it was something that came from watching people play the game in mass after launch.
We saw a lot of people in finales 'gaming' the game, backing up to the wall and waiting for zombies to come to them to make it much easier.
So we've change the ways the finales work now. The best way to describe it is we'll 'put you on the run'. The finales don't end until you get from point A to point B and if you try to back up against the wall you're just going to get smothered. They're going to keep coming and you're going to run out of ammo and run out of health.
So we're trying to push people to play the game a little more in the way it's intended rather than 'gaming' the game.
I'm sure that in the ideas that we come up with to counter that folks will find another seam and we'll come up with another idea to counter that.
That's one of the cool things about developing stuff and having the ability to iterate on the design really quickly: we're able to change things up and watch what happens.
I guess that will wrap up my key notes for this one and if you would like to read the full interview with Lombardi be sure to hit the news source link at the bottom.
