Guitar Hero To Get New Modes
Guitar Hero To Get New Modes
Published by: wes213 on Friday, May 15, 2009
Tagged: Gaming, Xbox 360, Xbox Live,

For the guys out there that think what could Guitar Hero add to a part five other then tracks to keep the gravy train rolling, well it must be party mode and USA Today has all the details on this and more such as a hand full of tracks that are set for the new Guitar Hero 5 game.

USA Today reports: The newest version of the music game, due this fall for the Microsoft Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, Sony PlayStation 3 and PS2 (no price set), lets up to four players rock out on whatever instrument they want, all on lead guitar, if they choose.

And a new competitive Fest mode lets four players at home (and up to eight online) battle against each other for top scores. As the song plays, when a player misses a note, they lose momentum points and must hit 20 straight notes to regain the momentum. “It becomes a little more competitive,” says project director Brian Bright.

There’s also new artists including Tom Petty (Runnin Down a Dream) and the White Stripes (Blue Orchid). Other new tunes on the songlist: The Rolling Stones (Sympathy for the Devil), Bob Dylan (All Along The Watchtower), Santana (No One To Depend On), Vampire Weekend (A-Punk), Johnny Cash (Ring of Fire) and Kings of Leon (Sex on Fire).

And those wanting some funky music can rock to Stevie Wonder’s Superstition. For that song, the Guitar Hero designers tracked Wonder’s electronic clavinet keyboard for players to try to match notes to. “It feels right,” Bright says. “We can’t pass up a chance to get one of Stevie Wonder’s best songs.”

Since 2005 when the first Guitar Hero was released, the franchise has generated more than $2 billion. At first, players would match colored notes on a moving music highway with keys on plastic guitar-shaped controllers. Last year’s Guitar Hero World Tour added drums and vocals -- as did Rock Band in 2007.

Guitar Hero 5’s songlist has a fresh feel, with one-fourth of the music having come out in the last 18 months and more than half from this decade. “We have a lot of new indie artists as well and Iron Maiden as more classic rock or heavy metal,” Bright says. “We’ve been trying to get the White Stripes and they have finally come around.”

The biggest hit, Bright says, may be the party play mode that lets people join a song while it is playing and switch instruments or difficulty level mid-song, too. “If you played any of our previous games, getting into a game is kind of a pain especially with multiple people with different instruments,” Bright says. “This is a perfect mode for parties. You can load up playlists with your favorite songs and just let that run and people can jump in when they want and the music never stops.”

With Rock Band sucking up bands and spitting them out at an alarming rate it would seem that Guitar Hero is just not holding its own on the battle field, lets hope Guitar Hero can find a way to pick up the pace or at least fire back with some quality.

Guitar Hero: World Tour Screenshot 4409

Kotaku.com reports: There's so much Rock Band DLC on offer every week that it's easy to forget that, occasionally, Guitar Hero World Tour gets some as well. Here's what it's getting for the month of April.

On April 2, there'll be three Pixies songs made available: Debaser, Monkey Gone To Heaven & The Sad Punk. April 9 sees the release of three tracks by the Silversun Pickups, those being Panic Switch, It's Nice to Know You Work Alone & Well Thought Out Twinkles.

On April 16, Steely Dan's Black Friday, Kid Charlemagne and Bodhisattva will be released, while on April 23, you can get Jailbait, Love Me Like a Reptile and Iron Fist by Motörhead.

Rounding out the month will be a Nirvana track pack on April 30, including Very Ape, Sappy & Stay Away.

Guitar Hero Dominates Rock Band Two To One

The facts and figures are in and it looks like Guitar Hero is on top of the rhythm games, no big surprise here but i must say i never would have guessed it would turn out as bad as 2 to 1 and as much as 4 to 1 in the UK.

Guitar Hero: World Tour Screenshot 4411

GameSpot.com reports: Last week the NPD Group, the industry standard of game-industry research firms, released its US sales figures for 2008. However, the company's top 10 game rankings only tracked individual products, or SKU (Stock Keeping Units), sold at retailers in the US.

As a result, it was unclear how two of the year's biggest rivals--Guitar Hero World Tour and Rock Band 2--fared against one another. Besides being multiplatform releases, the two solidly reviewed rhythm games each came in various retail configurations, such as a la carte or with one or more instruments.

Now, NPD has shared the combined US sales of both World Tour and Rock Band 2 across all platforms and SKUs. The result? The first full-band (drums, guitar/bass, and vocals) installment in Activision's billion-dollar franchise sold 3.4 million copies domestically, twice as many as Rock Band 2's 1.7 million haul. Analysts had the latter game, developed by former Tony Hawk shop Neversoft, selling nearly 1 million units in November alone.

Though the two-to-one ratio is a blowout victory in purely dollar terms, several factors play a role in World Tour's success. For one, the Guitar Hero brand is better known than Rock Band, even though the latter series is generally better received by critics. Besides being available in more retail configurations, Guitar Hero World Tour also went on sale on all platforms--the Wii, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3--on October 26. By contrast, Rock Band 2 rolled out onto its console on a staggered schedule, hitting the 360 on September 14, the PS3 October 19, and the Wii and PlayStation 2 on December 18. That means that only 13 days' worth of sales on the two latter platforms--which have the biggest installed bases in the US--were recorded by NPD.

Once again my favorite game tambourine hero fell short and didn't even make the article, oh well theres always next year.
