Epic offers fix for Gears of War 2 multiplayer issues
Epic offers fix for Gears of War 2 multiplayer issues

With a lot of fan complaints about the sequel to one of the 360's best selling games, it's developer Epic Games has finally released a patch via Xbox Live to fix some matchmaking issues.

Epic has released an update for its Xbox 360 blockbuster title Gears of War 2, intended to fix the long waits some players have been experiencing in multiplayer matchmaking. In order to get the update out as quickly as possible, the company focused just on immediate infrastructure issues and have left any potential gameplay issues for a future update.

Besides making public matchmaking faster, the update should also stop stats from being lost when playing online (which apparently happened frequently) and addresses an issue where some players were unable to start the story-based campaign if Xbox LIVE was down or unavailable. If you haven’t already downloaded the update, next time the game is loaded you should be prompted to do so.

Gears of War 2 ''Lootathon'' Results in Epic Banning
Gears of War 2 ''Lootathon'' Results in Epic Banning
Published by: forahobby on Friday, November 28, 2008

When there's a goof-up online, and a big run on DLC that a game maker wanted you to pay tons extra to get, it's probably not a smart idea to go into that very same developer's official forums and sound the alarm about it. Not once, but twice.

Yesterday's Great Banjo Lootathon (now closed, goodbye) exposed the Gears of War 2 Golden Lancer, among other things for a limited time, to download from Xbox Live for free, via the web. Reader RedRex32 says he went to Epic's Forums to spread word talk about it, even after the back door to the lancer was shut, and saw the thread he and others were writing in summarily deleted.

So RedRex32 started a new one, and that got him banzored beyond all recognition. As in a full on IP banning, not just his account. The lock-out screen advised this ban will be lifted "never."

"This all went down about 5:15 PST, hours after the entire issue wasn't even, well, an issue anymore. So the harm is questionable," RedRex32 says. "Smell a cover-up?" No, brah, I smell punishment. Look, not to blame the victim, but that's Epic's turf. It's probably not the wisest thing to hold this screwup under their nose like that. talk about this screwup on their turf, because they'd definitely be looking to retaliate on anyone who got the lancer this way.

 GameTrailers Video Editor Speaks Out
GameTrailers Video Editor Speaks Out
Published by: wes213 on Sunday, November 23, 2008

So folks are getting all bent out of shape about gametrailers.com and the fact they give better scores to the Xbox 360 ver of games and you know the PS3 fan boys are going to go off about that, so the video editor had a few words for the world on why the 360 comes out on top.

The blog looked like this: "Look, I'm sick of all the kerfluffle about how GT is biased towards 360 and how GT favors 360 and how GT hates on PS3. That ends now! The fact remains that 360 has just released better content than PS3. Period. See what I did there? I put a period after Period. That means conclusion; the end of discussion. The reason why GT gives 360 games better scores in the reviews is because the games are simply better experiences. The main reason for this--and it is often an overlooked and underestimated one--is because the 360 controller is a far superior gaming device than the Sony controller. This is to be said within the context that we are talking about influential, significant, market moving franchises--eg. Gears of War 2, Call of Duty, GTA 4, Halo 3 for crying out loud! Have you tried playing any of the previously mentioned multi-platformed titles on the PS3 with that awkward, unintuitive Sony controller? It simply cannot compete. The 360 controller's design is sleeker, more form fitting, and lends itself to a much more instinctual gaming experience. That Sony controller has been around for how many years now? It's time to update, reinvent, and innovate, and that's exactly how Microsoft has managed to stay ahead of the curve. I had posted a forum about this very topic and got reported for inciting a flamewar as they call it. Before the forum could evolve into a discussion it was taken down, but I did receive a very constructive critique about my thoughts from a fellow GT member who claimed that the PS3's D-pad was superior to the 360's, especially in fighter games, to which I give him credit and agreement. However, this goes without noting that I was focusing on major blockbuster titles like the Halos and the Gears and the Call of Duty's; titles that move consoles and market share. Sony not only needs to update its controller, but it also needs to incorporate it with an enjoyable, story-driven exclusive franchise to rival the mind-blowing Microsoft heavyweights Gears of War and Halo franchises. Do this, and you shall live. Do it not, and every one of you will die today."

I got to go with them on this one since every time i play the PS3 my finger slips off the trigger button due to the angle of the trigger buttons, not cool when you are getting shot at.

Don Mattrick Recaps The New Xbox Experience
Don Mattrick Recaps The New Xbox Experience
Published by: wes213 on Monday, November 10, 2008
Tagged: Xbox Live,

In an interview with OXM.com Don Mattrick talks about the new Xbox Experience soon to hit Xbox Live and talks about why he feels he was the true inventor of the Avatars that will be a big part of the XBOX 360 update, with that said lets have a look at the OXM.com interview.

OXM reports: We met Microsoft's affable new senior vice president (who had John Schappert, vice president of Xbox Live in tow) at this year's E3, to talk about "The New Xbox Experience".

And though he tried to stay calm, he's too excited about what Microsoft has coming up to keep it all in. From claiming to have invented avatars to sending competitors pity cake, this is one of the more exciteable interviews we've ever had.

With the New Xbox Experience less than two weeks away, now is the perfect time to revisit what Microsoft's power players had to say at E3...

So "The New Xbox Experience" - what's that all about, then?

Don Mattrick: Continued vision, continued investment, continued commitment to leadership in the online space. Gamertags! IDs! Achievements! Connectivity! Chat! This is part of an ongoing journey. When I joined Microsoft [in July 2007], I looked at what was going on and saw some component parts of this work that was already underway, and I was like, "Wow, this is just amazing."

It's awesome for gaming. At its core this is what we do - we build the best immersive interactive experiences that exist. People who have used the new Dashboard, for example, love it. It has an emotional connection. We make people the hero. What a novel idea that is!

And the Xbox 360 has the capability to be the hub of your living room. To drive fun and entertainment for your home, your friends, your family. Whether that is in gaming, in traditional media such as music or movies, or digital pictures, communication, the camera. Whatever things you want to look at, this box has tremendous opportunities.

Microsoft understands hardware, understands software. It knows how to do it globally - I mean it's built one or two operating systems along the way! - and only Microsoft could create this new experience. We are the only company that can do what we're doing today!

This is the first time in the history of video gaming that this has occurred. It's amazing. People are going to write about it and go, "Oh, wow. That was pretty cool. I was there when that was made public."

That's some big talk!

DM: Well, it's what made it easy to get support from people like John [Schappert]!

Damnation Gets Pushed Back To 2009
Damnation Gets Pushed Back To 2009
Published by: wes213 on Tuesday, November 04, 2008

Here is just one more game that will be getting pushed back due to the flood that is already starting to hit and from what i read here it sounds like there not even going to try to lock horns with Gears of War 2 even though the games are not all that similar.

Damnation Screenshot 3706

Codemasters has told Eurogamer the following: PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 demos will appear roughly a month before launch.

"Damnation is being rescheduled for an early 2009 release," a Codemasters spokesperson told us.

"The game will be much stronger and better as a result, and will also give people time to get all the pre-holiday releases out the way - ready for the fresh (and vertical) gaming experience that Damnation offers."

The most threatening of those "pre-holiday releases" will be Gears of War 2, as Damnation shares the same Unreal Engine 3 foundation and rather similar visuals and mechanics as a result.

But there are differences; Damnation ditches a cover system in favour of vertical gameplay, where players climb up buildings, leap between ledges and slide down zip wires during battle. Pace has replaced patience.

The setting is a steampunk alternate history of the American Civil war, and the levels have opened into giant three hour-long treks and course-planning puzzles, where the goal can be seen from the outset, and vice versa. And there are motorbikes - ones that can ride along walls.

The tactical rescheduling also moves Damnation away from Call of Duty: World at War, Resistance 2 and Left 4 Dead. But February 2009 happens to harbour Killzone 2 and to a lesser extent F.E.A.R. 2, which will present problems of their own.

New Xbox Experience Leaks On To The Net

Read this and read it all before you cost yourself 18 days of live play, it has got to the point that every time i turn on my xbox half of my friends list is playing a game thats not even out so beta keys are common or hacking is and now its not just games but your dash as well.

Xbox360FanBoy reports: It took no time at all but the New Xbox Experience has been leaked onto the internet. According to tipsters, someone who was invited to the NXE has made the update available in downloadable form online which -- like all other Xbox 360 dashboard updates -- has the ability to update any console with a USB thumb drive.

If you're thinking of grabbing the update, think again. According to Platform Nation using the leaked update disables Xbox Live on a console until November 19, the actual release of NXE. With Gears of War 2 just around the corner, you wouldn't want to take your console off the grid would you? While no reported bans have been handed down since the leak showed up it isn't hard to imagine Microsoft could take you offline for good. You've been warned.

GOW 2 Gives Japan & Germany The Cold Sholder

It looks like nothing but bad news for Japan and Germany when it comes to Gears of War 2 and EDGE is going to explain all that to you here but i just don't get it, OK i can see Germany for what ever reason but Japan would seem to be a must since the XBOX 360 has just started to really brake out on there scene.

Gears of War 2 Screenshot 4772

Here is what Edge-Online had to report: A Miscrosoft spokesperson has told Edge that Epic’s long-awaited Gears of War 2 will not be released in Japan.

“We can confirm that Gears of War 2 will not be available in Germany or Japan indefinitely” said the spokesperson.

The news may come as a shock to many observers as the original Gears of War was one of the first titles to crack the Japanese software charts during a time when the 360 console was selling at its slowest.

Gears had sold 33,212 copies in Japan in its first week and entered the software charts at number seven. The game has sold over 3m units worldwide and was the first title to overtake Halo 2 as the most popular game on Xbox Live.

The reasons why the game will not be released remain unclear. In May this year Germany’s ratings organization declined to issue the game an age certificate.

Edge has approached Microsoft’s offices in Japan for comment.

Greenberg Predicts 360 To Out Sell PS3 This Holiday Season
Greenberg Predicts 360 To Out Sell PS3 This Holiday Season
Published by: wes213 on Sunday, October 19, 2008
Tagged: Xbox 360,

There is no doubt that the 360 has been on a bit of a roll when it comes to console sells this year thanks to the launch of a few RPG games and increased sells in the Japanese market due to those RPG games but now Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg is making his holiday season predictions.

Here is what Aaron Greenberg had to say to kotaku on the subject: September marked the Xbox 360's best month of 2008, in terms of sales in the U.S — its performance in Japan hasn't been too bad either. Following a price cut that made the 360 the least expensive current generation console on the market, the company moved 347,200 units to American consumers. While it wasn't enough to supplant the Wii as the best selling console in the country, it was enough to beat the competition from Sony.

We spoke to Aaron Greenberg, group product manager for Xbox 360, just after NPD sales numbers hit to get his take. Unsurprisingly, he seemed rather pleased with the company's recent hardware successes.

"We expect to continue our price advantage over the PlayStation 3 for a long time," Greenberg told us, pointing to the $199 price tag of the company's entry level Arcade console, assuming that Sony would issue no pre-holiday price drops. "And we feel confident that we'll outsell the PS3 this holiday season in North America and in Europe. We'll do it on a global scale."

As for what those consumers are picking up, Greenberg said "We've seen lifts across all consoles, but the Arcade is doing exceptionally well."

Microsoft touted a 42% increase, month to month, on NPD hardware sales data. Greenberg made sure to point out that the August survey period consisted of a four week month, with the September period five weeks long. That, Greenberg said, illustrated "flat growth" of the PlayStation 3.

Fanning the flames of the console war of words, Greenberg harped on the Xbox 360's abnormally high attach rate, which at 8.1 games per console, outpaces the PS3 by 2:1 and the Wii by 3:1. "And that doesn't include [Xbox Live Arcade] games," he boasted.

Okay, we get it. You're swimming in cash and exclusive and high attach rates. Good job. Is Xbox Live going to work this holiday season? Because it didn't last year. How prepared are you, Microsoft man? How will Live hold up?

"Hopefully, very well," Greenberg said "We've grown our team and our infrastructure over the past year." With the New Xbox Experience, Gears of War 2 and even more Live ready titles putting a strain on the service this holiday, we'll see, Aaron. We'll see.

 Microsoft has confirmed ShackNews Rumor
Microsoft has confirmed ShackNews Rumor
Published by: wes213 on Wednesday, September 10, 2008
Tagged: Xbox 360,

This was all started as a rumor that was posted by ShackNews but it ended with pure fact and Microsoft has even started to drop some of the employees that are not working on Halo Wars, as soon as Halo Wars is complete Ensemble Studios will close there doors.

Halo Wars Screenshot 4323

Here is the post that started it all from ShackNews: "Shacknews has learned via multiple independent reports that developer Ensemble Studios (Age of Empires) will shut down operation following the release of its upcoming title Halo Wars.

According to sources, Those attached to Halo Wars have been offered incentives to stay on the project until completion.

Halo Wars, an RTS based on the Halo franchise, was announced in September of 2006. The Xbox 360 title is currently slated for release sometime in the first half of 2009.

Ensemble Studios was founded in 1995. The Microsoft-owned company is best known for the Age of Empires series of RTS games."

With that said Microsoft responded to the rumor with this E-mail that was sent around to all employees of the company: “Today, we shared with our employees at Ensemble that we have plans to close the studio after Halo Wars RTM. Such a decision is never easy. Like any business, we’re accountable for making tradeoffs and the right level of investments that will drive profit and future growth. However, as we reviewed our first-party portfolio and where we need to invest and divest our resources to achieve our long-term strategies, it became clear to us that closing the studio and redeploying those resources to other more scalable ventures is the right thing for our business at this time.

“Unfortunately, our decision to close Ensemble will adversely impact many of the studio’s team members. Following the closure, the Ensemble leadership team will form a new entity and have agreed to partner with Microsoft to develop future products and provide support for Halo Wars post launch. While the new company will be hiring a portion of the Ensemble employees, its size and resources prevent it from offering positions to the entire Ensemble team. We hope to integrate much of this creative talent into MGS or the broader IEB team, where we have relevant openings.

“Ensemble Studios has produced many notable games over the years – including the Ages franchise – that have helped MGS become a leader in interactive entertainment. And now, Halo Wars is already proving to be a hit by people who have seen and played early versions of the game. The Ensemble team is committed to continuing its development, testing and support of Halo Wars through to the completion of halo wars. We’re also working closely with the studio’s leaders to ensure a smooth launch of the game in early 2009 and continuing support thereafter. We will support the studio in every way possible as they work to deliver this highly anticipated game.

“This action notwithstanding, I want to emphasize that the overall investment Microsoft is making in video game development is not diminished, and we will continue to bring in talent to work on titles and franchises where we’ll see the most ROI. Our priority is to continue to nurture the creative freedom that allows us to successfully drive our business strategy forward. Meanwhile, we’re launching some outstanding games over the next few months. We’ve just launched Too Human and Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise, and soon we’ll see many other games hit retail store shelves, including Scene It! 2, Fable 2, Gears of War 2, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, Lips and, of course, Halo Wars.

“I want to thank you for your hard work and focus as we head into the next few months and make this a blowout year for first-party games. Please be supportive and respectful of our Ensemble colleagues as they go through this tough time.

“Phil”
