As completion of Gears of War nears, the developers of the game are able to see their ideas materialized on screen as every feature in the design doc moves into the game. In his latest blog update, Cliff Bleszinki, Gears of War Lead Designer, shares his excitement about the game’s progress.

“We had a press junket this week at work where I was FINALLY able to unveil some of the reasons why Gears will be oh-so-fun to play” explains CliffyB.

“It's not anyone's surprise that co-op is going to be a big feature and being able to show it off in full glory with good ol' Rod next to me was a heck of a milestone. It makes quite a bit of difference when both of us are actual characters in the story and not just clones of one another.”

Back in 2005, when Gears of War was unveiled to the world, a fact sheet provided by Microsoft Game Studios touted the following feature:

Fire team co-op action: All game modes, levels and scenarios are designed for cooperative fire team play (A.I. or human). For the first time, A.I. teammates are indiscernible from human players. They move intelligently, take orders effectively, and seek cover and defend themselves when necessary. Gamerѕ will experience richer cooperative gameplay than ever, through unique characters that require cooperation to survive. Voice recognition and real-time lip-syncing heighten the immersive experience.

It sounded great on paper but hard to believe they will achieve those features but now, judging from CliffyB’s comments, it might happen that the talented developers at Epic Games might have been able to achieve those ambitious goals.

Two-player cooperative gameplay featuring Marcus and Dom has already been confirmed but we keep our fingers crossed hoping they can take the maximum amount of co-op players up to four for the main campaign. After Ubisoft is giving us 8 player co-op in Ghost Recon Advanced Warfigther, we can’t accept less than that on any Xbox 360 game.

We’ll have more on Gears of War as it develops.
