DS Piracy

In a few of Next-Gens recent news post , they have put alot of focus on the R4DS card that allows the user to run movies, music, image files and game back ups.

In the first story posted by Next-Gen they had this to say, “The implications are massive. In America it’s thought 90 percent of Nintendo DS users are playing pirated games because of R4s."

“Crucially, the R4 has shifted the balance of power in the piracy industry to the consumer — and that is hugely worrying."

"Takings from Nintendo DS games in the US are lower than any other console and no doubt it will have a similar impact [in the UK]... That’s why we intend to stop trade in these chips wherever we can.”

Soon to follow was Next-Gens post saying that the first post was full of made up facts. That post looked like this, "Following reports suggesting that DS software piracy is rampant in the US, Nintendo told Next-Gen that it “continues to be aggressive” in taking action against such illegal activity, but noted that game copying devices “have not reached the mass market" yet.

That brings us up to date and the new news post that states, "The ELSPA Intellectual Property Crime Unit is evaluating the R4 game copying device, as it allows for the downloading and play of illegal Nintendo DS software available via the internet."

“We are aware that Nintendo has taken actions against these devices in other countries and we are working closely with them to consider next steps in the UK."

“Broadly speaking, it is well known that ELSPA's Intellectual Property Crime Unit fights vigorously against products and devices that violate our members' intellectual property rights. This includes devices that circumvent the security of our members' products and promote the play of illegally copied software. We take great stock in ensuring this continues to be the case."

It just goes to show that fake facts like saying 90% of US DS users use the R4card and printing quotes like (“have not reached the mass market" yet.) where you can see they took a fact and added the word (yet) after the quotes just for the sinister effect, it can lead you to believe that the level of piracy may not be 90% but soon will be.

So now that i have armed you with the facts, the way i see them, your free to decide is the R4DS the plague they make it out to be, or is it just the next passing mod fad.
