Microsoft is celebrating a gigantic spike in Xbox 360 sales – as it prepares to splash out a whopping £4 million on marketing for the release of Halo 3.
According to ChartTrack data, the platform holder enjoyed a 260 per cent rise in sales of its next-gen format two weeks ago (week 34), after introducing the Elite model to the market and dropping the price of its Core and Premium consoles.
Perhaps even more impressively, sales only dipped 20 per cent the following week (week 35) – leaving up-to-date calendar year sales 4.9 per cent higher than they were in 2006.
And now the firm is set to splash the cash on ‘phase two’ of its pre-Christmas 360 sales push with the release of system seller Halo 3 – which it is backing with what it calls the ‘biggest entertainment launch of all time’.
We’ve seen what the previous two iterations of Halo did for console sales, so we’re anticipating an incredible amount of demand come the launch of Halo 3,” said Microsoft’s head of gaming and entertainment Stephen McGill.
“The day one revenue of Halo 2 was the biggest number for the launch of any entertainment property. That has since been surpassed by Spider-Man 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean 3. But we’re confident Halo 3 will take back this accolade.
“It’s only when you start comparing figures to the launch of huge films that it really hits home – this really will be the biggest entertainment launch of all time.”
Well it looks like a guy who runs under the gamertag "SCAR" has played an illegal copy of Halo 3 Epsilon Beta and silly enough he went online.
A screenshot has been released of his console and the error page he has received.
Apprently, the Halo 3 Epsilon Beta game was stolen from a Microsoft employee.
Information has been released about the Call of Duty 4 Beta "2nd Profile Exploit" which enabled users who already had a token to test COD4 beta to play under a 2nd profile.
There was an exploit (it's been resolved), in the call of duty 4 beta. The public beta had 100k valid participants who qualified and were provided special tokens which allowed them to download the COD4 beta from marketplace.
There was an exploit that enabled valid beta participants to sign in with their accounts on a different machine, use their beta token and download the beta. The beta was then fully functional for any LIVE profile on that 2nd machine (even after the beta participant's account was removed). Approximately 23k consoles were used to take advantage of this exploit to illegitimately access the COD4 beta.
The exploit has been fixed to prevent any additional users from illegitimately accessing the Call of Duty 4 beta.
The current POR is to issue a 24-hour console lockout that will prevent these 23k users from using their consoles to sign in to LIVE. These users will also receive a message in the dash with an explanation as to why their console has been locked out for 24 hours for violating the LIVE TOU [Terms of Use] and a warning that more severe actions may be taken if they attempt a similar action in the future (console could be banned permanently, etc.). Again, this is not a permanent console ban - it's more of a "slap on the wrist" and a warning to these 23k users who used this exploit
As you may remember, back in late 2004 Microsoft's hardware partners announced Windows Media Center Extenders, which were basically STBs that could replicate a cheesy version of Media Center's interface on your TV over your home network. Not surprisingly, people didn't want another box (let alone a box with a crappy UI that wasn't as good as a real Media Center) so those boxes never took off. But the best (and most frequently used) implementation came way later on with the Xbox 360, which was able to far better replicate the XP and Vista Media Center experience.
So today Microsoft is announcing a reinvigorated Media Center Extender effort called... wait for it... Extenders for Windows Media Center. Ok, the name totally sucks, but the important part is Microsoft upgraded its wayward Extender system with a new version that takes full advantage of Vista (including live HDTV streaming), supports 802.11n, and adds something that really blew our mind: codecs we actually care about, namely XviD and DivX. Niveus, Linksys, and D-Link will all be launching new devices based on this software platform, so watch out for those -- as well as DVD players, TVs, and all manner of other home theater devices Microsoft is apparently trying to get this new system built right into. Unfortunately this new Extender rev isn't being announced for the Xbox 360 (yet), so we'll all have to wait a while longer before playing XviD and DivX movies on that thing -- without transcoding, anyway.
